The Canadian rowing men's eight that finished second at this year's World Championships in August was again runner up to Germany in a grueling race over 12.7 kilometres (the World and Olympic distance is 2 km) today.
Canada's time was 38.46, approx 24 seconds behind the Germans. The U.S. was third, followed by a British eight.
"We were lucky to race at all because severe wind and rain cancelled the sprint races yesterday," said Canadian men's development coach Terry Paul.
The eight is Derek O'Farrell of Unionville, ON, James Dunaway of Duncan, BC, Malcolm Howard of Victoria, BC, Andrew Byrnes of Toronto, ON, Doug Csima of Oakville, ON, Gabe Bergen of 100 Mile House, BC, and Rob Gibson of Kingston, ON, and Steve VanKnotsenburg of Beamsville, ON and cox Ronan Sabo-Walsh of Vancouver. Sabo-Walsh was the only member of the team not in the lineup at the World Championships in Poland.
Billed as the "toughest rowing race in the world," the E.ON Hanse-Cup is a festival-style event that takes place on the Kiel Canal near Rendsburg, Germany. The international eights have to cover a distance from Breiholz to the Eisenbahnhochbrücke bridge.
