For the fifth consecutive year, the United States will send a men's eight to race at the E.On Hanse Canal Cup in Rendsburg, Germany. The three-day event scheduled for October 1-3 is highlighted by Monday's 12.7-kilometer international men's eight race. In addition to the U.S., national crews from Germany, Great Britain and the Netherlands, as well as Cambridge University Boat Club, will race in the international events.
The U.S. boat will be made up of coxswain Marcus McElhenney, Beau Hoopman, Matt Schnobrich, Josh Inman, Brett Newlin, Patrick O'Dunne, Dan Beery, Matt Deakin and Matt Hughes. McElhenney, Hoopman, Inman, Deakin and Beery were all members of the men's eight that won the gold medal at the 2005 World Championships in Gifu, Japan. McElhenney, Newlin and Hughes won silver medals in the four with coxswain in Gifu, while Schnobrich and O'Dunne raced in the pair.
In addition to the 12.7-kilometer race, the schedule for the international eights includes a sprint race on Saturday and an ergometer (indoor rowing machine) competition on Sunday.
Last year, the United States finished second behind Germany in the distance race. For more information on the regatta, please visit the E.On Hanse Canal Cup website.
