Cambridge University Boat Club rowing squad will race for the first time this year at the Canal Cup and today announced its crew to compete for the E.ON Hanse-Cup on the Kiel Canal this weekend (October 1-3).
Cambridge, who lead the legendary Boat Race series with Oxford by 78 wins to 72 since 1829, are already back in training for the 2006 Boat Race, sponsored by Xchanging, and due to take place on April 2nd They are excited about the prospect of making a first appearance at the Canal Cup which also feature eights from the USA, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Germany.
"It's a privilege to be invited to the event and to get an opportunity to compete at this level, "said Duncan Holland recently.
Holland named his crew as (from bow to stroke with cox): Ed Sherwood (bow); Don Wyper ; Kyle Coveny; Thorsten Engelmann; Sebastian Schulte; Tom Edwards (President); Sebastian Thormann; Kip McDaniel; Peter Rudge (cox).
However, he counselled against seeing this as a pointer to next year's Blue Boat line up. "People shouldn't see this as a shadow Blue Boat. There are, for instance, three old Blues who are not in that line up. So it's a bit early to be making any assumptions," he said.
The Canal Cup takes place over a 12.7km course and is often watched by around 150,000 spectators. There will also be some live TV coverage of the event on NDR Television.
A parallel mass participation event takes place over the same weekend with club crews and dragon boat racing.
