ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's rowing head coach Mark Rothstein announced Wednesday (Aug. 30) the hiring of three new assistant coaches: Veronika Platzer, Bernadette Marten Teeley and Molly Gutilla.
Platzer will take over the second varsity eight coaching duties while also serving as the team's recruiting coordinator. She comes to U-M after spending four years as an assistant coach at the University of Virginia. She led the Cavalier varsity four to an NCAA championship in 2004, and her novice crews have been Atlantic Coast Conference and South Region champs. In the summer of 2006 she coached the U.S. Junior National Team's four to a seventh-place finish at the Junior World Championships in Amsterdam.
"Veronika is an outstanding coach with many years of experience at the college and national team level," said Rothstein.
Teeley was a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association first-team All-American at Michigan in 2001 when the Wolverines won the Big Ten Conference championship and placed second as a team at the NCAA Championships. Teeley's first varsity eight finished third in its event at the 2001 NCAA Championships. Following her Michigan career she was a member of the U.S. National Team eight that won a world championship in 2002. Prior to attending Michigan she was an Academic All-American at the University of Dayton.
"I'm really excited to have Bernadette on board," said Rothstein. "She truly represents what Michigan Rowing is all about. She's going to be an outstanding addition to our staff."
Gutilla will assume the novice coach role for the Maize and Blue. In 2005 and 2006 she was the novice coach at Williams College, which earned the NCAA Division III national championship in 2006. She rowed at Ohio State from 1997-2001.
"Molly is a very bright young coach, and I have no question that she will do an outstanding job developing our novice team," said Rothstein.
The trio will replace former associate head coach Emily Ford, who recently took over the head coaching job at Oregon State, and assistant coach Vita Scaglione, who is also headed to Oregon State with Ford.
The 2006-07 season of Michigan rowing gets underway on Sept. 16, when Michigan hosts Michigan State on Belleville Lake.
