Canada's National Team women's eight will face top U.S. women rowers this Sunday, August 11 at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in St. Catharines, Ont.
The women will row in the Championship Eight event as the London High Performance Centre. The U.S. women are entered as the Princeton Training Center.
After a stay in St. Catharines, the U.S. women will visit the Canadian women's training centre in London, Ont. for a three-day camp next week.
"It's exciting to have the chance to train with one of the top eights," says Canadian women's coach Al Morrow. "It's quite unique that they are prepared to come to London and train with us."
The U.S. women’s head coach is Tom Terhaar. Last year, the U.S. women’s eight finished fourth at the World Championships – Canada was seventh. This year, the Worlds will be held in Seville, Spain in September.
Members of the eight are Sarah Pape of Toronto, Ont. (coxswain), Pauline VanRoessel of Bow Island, Alta., Dorota Urbaniak of Toronto, Ont., Karen Clark of Delta, B.C., Jacqui Cook of Burlington, Ont., Rachelle deJong of Regina, Sask., Darcy Marquardt of Richmond, B.C., Katy Dunnet of Vancouver. B.C. and Roslyn McLeod of Burlington, Ont.
Also rowing in the same event as the London High Performance Centre’s second entry, will be Canada’s women’s eight that will be leaving next week for the Commonwealth regatta in Nottingham, England. The Commonwealth eight is Emily Boyle of Port Elgin, Ont., Bonnie Fiala of Enderby, B.C., Marilyn Taylor of Calgary, Alta., Rachel Dunnet of Vancouver, B.C., Kathy Eggenberger of Port McNeill, B.C., Stacey Norwood of St. John, N.B., Emily Poupart of Chicoutimi, Que., Nicole Borges of Mississauga, Ont. and Carolyn Rudden (coxswain) of West Vancouver, B.C.
The U.S. women will also have a second eight in this event. The other eights are New York A.C., University of British Columbia and Ottawa Rowing Club.
Kubet Weston of Tillsonburg, Ont. and Buffy Williams of St. Catharines, who are the Canadian National Team’s women’s double, will each row in an event for singles at the Henley.
This is the 120th Royal Canadian Henley (Aug. 7 to 11, 2002), Canada's top club regatta, held each year on Martindale Pond in Port Dalhousie near St. Catharines, Ont.
