The Canadian Juniors just missed out on the podium today at the World Rowing Junior Championships (Aug. 2 to 5) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Conlin McCabe of Brockville, Ont., Anthony Jacob of Vancouver, B.C., Andrew Knorr of Saskatoon, Sask., Andrew Nelson of Peterborough, Ont. and Ronan Sabo-Walsh (cox) of Vancouver, B.C. were fourth in the coxed four event.
"The coxed four had a great race, just missing out on a medal," said John Ruscitti, National Junior Program Coordinator. "They're a young crew (16 to 18 years old), so these guys will be back."
Romania won the coxed four event in 6:25.69, with Italy in a close second in 6:26.96, then Germany in 6:27.23, with the Canadians, who held onto second-place until after the 1000-metre mark, finishing right behind in 6:28.61 in fourth overall.
Rosie DeBoef and Erika Shaw, both of Victoria, B.C., also finished fourth. Germany won this women's pair event in 7:17.36, followed by Bulgaria in 7:18.79 and Romania in 7:21.51 - Canada's time was 7:30.12.
The women's double of Lauren Hutchins of North Vancouver, B.C. and Sarah Graham of Saskatoon, Sask., was sixth overall in 7:23.82. Estonia, Austria and Romania picked up the medals in this event.
"It was great to see two women's crews in the finals, since Canada hasn't had a junior women's boat in the finals since 2003," said Ruscitti. "Overall, this regatta was a step in the right direction for Canada. The racing is more intense than what they are used to, and that allows our rowers to learn and improve in a very short period of time."
In other racing, Canada's junior men's pair was first in 7:15.45 in the C final to finish 13th overall.
The junior women's four was fourth in its B final in 7:28.26 - the Canadian women finish 10th overall.
The German junior team crews were the stars of this regatta, with 13 boats in the finals ending up with five gold, three silver and three bronze medals.
