An incident took place last Sunday morning (16th August) in training between the GB Rowing Team men's eight and a double scull containing Angus Groom and Jack Beaumont.
Both crews were travelling at paddling speed and met head-on.
Groom is already back in training and has remained at the GB Rowing Team training camp in Portugal and will be fully recovered to travel to Aiguebelette in France next week where he will be, as planned, the sculling reserve for the World Championships starting there on August 30th.
Beaumont's injuries were more serious and he is in hospital. He has suffered some trauma to his back but is expected to make a full recovery and to return to elite rowing in the months to come. Understandably this will involve significant rehab and will take some time.
Beaumont rowed at the recent World U23 Championships where he was fifth in the men's single scull final. Earlier this season he won a bronze medal in the quadruple scull at the European Championships at senior level as a substitute for Charles Cousins.
He had not been selected to travel to France but was with the squad training in Portugal at the Aviz Training Centre.
