WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - Racing at the 2010 USRowing National Selection Regatta #3 continued Thursday with heats in the men's double sculls and men's pair, as well as semifinals in the women's double sculls.
Clocking the fastest time in the men's double sculls was the Craftsbury Sculling Center duo of Tom Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Peter Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio), who led with a 6:23.047. The Graves brothers finished 16th in the double at the 2009 World Rowing Championships. They were followed in overall time by USRowing Training Center's Will Miller (Duxbury, Mass.) and Scott Gault (Piedmont, Calif.), who finished in 6:23.931. Elliot Hovey (Manchester-By-The-Sea, Mass.) and Wes Piermarini (West Brookfield, Mass.) of the USRowing Training Center crossed the line third overall with a 6:24.348.
In the women's double sculls, USRowing Training Center's Kate Bertko (Oakland, Calif.) and Stesha Carle (Long Beach, Calif.) covered the course in 6:50.616. Carle and Bertko won bronze in the 2010 Rowing World Cup stop in Munich and qualified to represent the U.S. at the upcoming World Rowing Championships in New Zealand.
Second in the women's double sculls in overall time was USRowing Training Center's Megan Kalmoe (St. Croix Falls, Wis.) and Margot Shumway (Westlake, Ohio) with a 6:53.201, followed by USRowing Training Center's Sarah Trowbridge (Guilford, Conn.) and Jessica Reel (Atlanta, Ga.), who recorded a 6:55.594.
In the men's pair, USRowing Training Center's Dan Walsh (Norwalk, Conn.) and Charlie Cole (New Canaan, Conn.) had the fastest overall time with 6:27.979. Walsh won bronze in the eight in the 2008 Olympic Games and teammate Cole finished fifth in the pair at the 2009 World Rowing Championships.
The USRowing Training Center duo of Silas Stafford (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and Sam Stitt (McLean, Va.) were second overall with a 6:29.001. They were followed by USRowing Training Center - Oklahoma City's Ross James (DeKalb, Ill.) and Grant James (DeKalb, Ill.) with a 6:30.200.
NSR #3 serves as a step towards qualifying for U.S. National Team Selection Camp, from which the "big boats" (men's eight, women's eight, women's quadruple sculls, men's quadruple sculls, men's four and lightweight men's four) will be selected for the 2010 World Rowing Championships in Lake Karapiro, New Zealand.
