WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - Finals for tomorrow's USRowing National Selection Regatta #3 are set with the completion of semifinals Friday morning in the men's double sculls and men's pair.
In Friday morning racing, six boats advanced to the final out of two semifinals in the men's double sculls and six from the men's pair advanced, with the remaining boats moving to the B final.
In the first semifinal of the men's double sculls, Elliot Hovey (Manchester-By-The-Sea, Mass.) and Wes Piermarini (West Brookfield, Mass.) of the USRowing Training Center crossed with the fastest time in 6:22.736.
They were followed closely by New York Athletic Club/Penn A.C. Rowing Association's Stephen Whelpley (Moquon, Wis.) and Jamie Koven (Green Village, N.J.) in 6:23.163. Finishing third was the Penn A.C./Potomac Boat Club duo of Ross Anderson and William Cowles in 6:32.582.
Advancing in first place to the final from of the second semifinal was USRowing Training Center's crew of Will Miller (Duxbury, Mass.) and Scott Gault (Piedmont, Calif.) that finished in 6:24.927. Craftsbury Sculling Center's Tom Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Peter Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished second in 6:25.339, and advancing third in 6:26.945 was GMS Rowing Center's Brian de Regt (Rowayton, Conn.) and Jonathan Winter (New Haven, Conn.).
In the first semifinal of the men's pair, USRowing Training Center teammates Brett Newlin, (Riverton, Wyo.) and Jake Cornelius (Brooktondale, N.Y.) finished first in 6:34.980, with Silas Stafford (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and Sam Stitt (McLean, Va.) behind them in 6:37.995. Finishing third was the USRowing Training Center - Oklahoma City crew of Ryan Monaghan, (Wilmette, Ill.) and Deaglan McEachern (Portsmouth, N.H.) who crossed in 6:39.631.
Advancing out of the second semifinal was the USRowing Training Center team of Dan Walsh (Norwalk, Conn.) and Charlie Cole (New Canaan, Conn.), who clocked a 6:32.500, followed by USRowing Training Center's duo of Tom Peszek (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and Justin Stangel (Madison, Wis.) in 6:33.798. Crossing third in 6:34.372 was USRowing Training Center's Henrik Rummel (Pittsford, N.Y.) and Giuseppe Lanzone (Annandale, Va.).
Following the semifinals was the B final of the women's double and the C finals of the men's double and pair. Winning the women's double B final with a time of 7:10.505, was Craftsbury Sculling Center's Shay Seager and Emily Dreissigacker (Morrisville, Vt.).
Winning the C final in the men's double was the Pocock Rowing Center team of Austin Nichols and Zachary Ellison (Duluth, Minn.), who finished in 6:41.778.
In the C final of the men's pair, USRowing Training Center's teammates Blaise Didier (San Francisco, Calif.) and Steve Coppola (Buffalo, N.Y.) won with a time of 6:37.834.
The finals for the women's pair and lightweight men's pair were determined Thursday morning, while the final for the women's double sculls was set Thursday afternoon. Finals in all five events are scheduled for Saturday at 7 a.m. For complete schedule and results, visit www.powerhousetiming.com.
NSR #3 serves as a step towards qualifying for U.S. National Team Selection Camp, from which the "big boats" (men's eight, women's eight, women's quadruple sculls, men's quadruple sculls, men's four and lightweight men's four) will be selected for the 2010 World Rowing Championships in Lake Karapiro, New Zealand.
