US military veterans will compete in at least one major international regatta this summer in memory of Ryan Torgerson (USMC). This "Thank you for your service" event is supported by Mr Charles Klotsche (USMC) and his Globetrotter Marathon organization (http://www.globetrottermarathon.org/). Mr. Klotsche has taken wounded veterans around the world to compete in marathons. Klotsche noted, "Participation in these competitions boosts self-esteem and assists with transitions into civilian life."
The "Torgy 4" will consist of an impressive group of fully able-bodied rowers. The group includes a two-time Olympian (Navy), a US Naval Academy graduate and former US National team member, a recently retired, 20+ Navy pilot and a USAF Colonel. The coxswain for the boat will be a US Navy Captain. The group is assembled and coached by Garrett Klugh (2004 Olympian).
Ryan "Torgy" Torgerson served his country as a Captain in the US Marine Corp. He was also a member of the US National Rowing Team from 1998-2004. Torgy unexpectedly and suddenly passed away well before his time in 2011. He is survived by his wife, Paige and two children, Brett Axl and Heidi Love. He is fondly remembered and missed by everyone who knew him.
After the Torgy 4 was selected, members of the crew and coordinators agreed that a more impactful / meaningful way to honor Capt. Torgerson's life would be to elevate the effort to a larger platform, and use the opportunity to promote a greater cause.
The Warriors for Freedom foundation launched the Remembering the 22 Challenge campaign to honor and raise awareness of the estimated 22 U.S. veterans who commit suicide every day. Although Torgy died of natural causes, this is what a rower and a Marine like Torgy would want, attack the problem and support the team.
The Torgy 4 can't imagine a Marine like Torgerson would want it any other way which is why he will be leading the charge down the racecourse.
