The Canadian Team arrived in Lucerne, Switzerland, this week ready to face top crews from the world's most powerful rowing nations at the third World Cup (July 9 to 11, 2010) of the year.
"We've been over in Europe for a couple of weeks now, training and competing at British Henley, so the crews are anxious to race at this World Cup against the best the rowing world has to offer," said Peter Cookson, High Performance Director for Rowing Canada. "Lucerne is known as the top international racing opportunity next to the Worlds or Olympics, so we're excited to see where our crews stand."
Twelve crews - comprised of 15 women and 22 men - have already taken to the Rotsee course for a pre-World Cup warm-up. Of these athletes, 14 are 2008 Olympians and six of those are Olympic medalists. Women's coxswain Lesley Thompson-Willie is the most-decorated team member, having been on the team since the 1980s; and Brockville's Conlin McCabe, who rows at the University of Washington, is the youngest at 19 and one of the largest at six-foot eight inches.
This year, Canada sent a smaller team to World Cup 1 in Bled, and brought home two gold medals (women's pair and men's lightweight double) and a bronze (men's four). For the second World Cup in Munich, only single sculler Malcolm Howard competed - making the A finals and finishing sixth overall.
The draw for World Cup 3 will be posted at www.worldrowing.com on Thursday. Racing begins Friday with a long day for Canada, and continues through to the Sunday finals.
