PRINCETON, N.J. - Four crews qualified for the 2006 World Rowing Under 23 Championships on Thursday at the 2006 USRowing Under 23 Team Trials on Carnegie Lake in Princeton, N.J.
The women's pair, lightweight women's single sculls, lightweight men's quadruple sculls, and men's four with coxswain all earned the right to represent the U.S. at the championships July 20-23 in Hazewinkel, Belgium.
In total, 11 boat classes were contested in a time-trial format on Thursday. The winner of each boat class also had to make a time standard in order to qualify for the team.
In the women's pair, Stesha Carle (Long Beach, Calif.) and Ellen Tomek (Flushing, Mich.) crossed the finish line with a time of 7:25.4. Racing uncontested, the duo from USRowing's Under 23 Selection Camp met the time standard by eight seconds. Last year, Carle helped the U.S. win a gold medal in the women's four at the under 23 world championships.
Pocock Development Camp's Heather Johnson (Portland, Ore.) clocked an 8:05.5 to win the lightweight women's single sculls. Racing against two other scullers, Johnson won the lightweight single competition by nearly seven seconds and met the time standard by three seconds.
Saugatuck Rowing Club's lightweight men's quadruple sculls quartet of Richard Klein (Westport, Conn.), Daniel Feldman (Miami, Fla.), Jon Winter (New Haven, Conn.), and Brian de Regt (Rowayton, Conn.) also raced uncontested. The crew finished with a time of 6:05.7, meeting the time standard by three seconds.
The men's four with coxswain of coxswain Chase Phillips (Woodbridge, Va.), Kevin Baum (Potomac, Md.), Max Vice-Reshel (Milwaukee, Wis.), Will Miller (Duxbury, Mass.), and Vince McCall (Newtown Square, Pa.) stroked a 6:24.7 to meet the time standard by two seconds. The Princeton Training Center crew was the lone entry in the event.
The U.S. also will send a crew to the championships in the men's eight, women's eight, lightweight men's four, and men's quadruple sculls. Those boats will be named on July 7 from the under 23 national team selection camps that are currently in progress. James Dietz II (Amherst, Mass.) already qualified for the team in the men's single sculls.
