PRINCETON, N.J. - John Wik has been named Director of Referee Programs, USRowing announced on Wednesday.
Wik, from New Castle, Del., will be responsible for the development and administration of a long-range plan to recruit, train, qualify, maintain, and compensate USRowing referees. In developing the plan, he will be working closely with the referee committee, local organizing committees, coaches, and other members of the USRowing community.
"One of the most important resources to USRowing members is our volunteer referee corps," USRowing Chief Executive Officer Glenn Merry said. "We have struggled during recent years to address a full and robust plan to support and promote this group within our sport. The creation of this position reflects USRowing's commitment to address the serious issues our officials face each competition season. This position will work with our valued volunteer leadership in the coming months to build a plan that will provide a base for the future growth of our sport.
"John Wik is a proven leader and business developer. He is the perfect match for a role that will create a long-term business plan for our referee corps."
Wik comes to USRowing with 30 years of experience in business development, government, finance, and higher education. He is a co-founder and executive director of Newport Rowing Club, a licensed USRowing referee, and a certified rowing coach. Wik can be reached at [email protected].
"Referees play a vital role in providing a safe, fair, and equitable experience for athletes at all levels," Wik said. "I look forward to working with the USRowing community to strengthen this role."
