Competition is heating up at the World Under-23 Regatta in Genoa, Italy (July 25 to 28).
With the best time in this event today, the Canadian men's eight won its heat in 5:52.29 and advances directly to the final. The U.S. men's eight won the other heat in 5:53.33 - followed by Australia, Russia and Poland. The U.S. and Canada will be the ones to watch in tomorrow's final - last year, the Canadians edged out the U.S. eight to win gold.
Members of the Canadian eight are Ian Harrison of Victoria, B.C., Chris Jarvis of St. Catharines, Ont., James Dunaway of Victoria, B.C., Neil Armour of West Vancouver, B.C., Adam Gant of Kelowna, B.C., Peter Dembicki of West Vancouver, B.C., Bradley Burns of St. Catharines, Ont., Scott Frandsen of Kelowna, B.C and David Tso of Vancouver, B.C. (coxswain). Four members of this year’s eight were part of the gold-medal-winning 2001 Under-23 eight.
The lightweight men's pair of Dave Stephens of Belleville, Ont. and Mike Lewis of Victoria also advance today. Although they were third in their heat, this afternoon the Canadians convincingly won their repechage. "It was a real breakthrough," said Under-23 lightweight coach Howie Campbell of Victoria. "They got the boat moving and the rep was absolutely outstanding."
"We went hard for 1000 metres and the rest went well," said crew member Dave Stephens. "Tomorrow we'll face strong competition from Australia, Germany and Yugoslavia."
The men's pair of Aaron Kroeker of St. Catharines, Ont. and Darryl DeLeeuw of Victoria, B.C. advances to tomorrow morning's semi-finals after finishing third in their rep today in 7:26.13.
Canada women's four was third in its heat, but then fifth in repechage and do not advance (see times below). The members of the four are Andréanne Morin of Montréal, Que., Zoe Hoskins of Edmonton, Alta., Ashley Brzozowicz of Toronto, Ont. and Adrienne Hunter of Toronto, Ont.
The men's single of Dave Marchioro (8:16.21) of Burnaby, B.C. also finished fifth in his rep and does not advance to the final.
The Canadian women's lightweight double of Lysanne Lavigne of Boucherville, Que. and Lindsay Jennerich of Victoria, B.C did not race today after winning a heat yesterday. They will race in the semi-finals and finals on Sunday.
Formerly called the Nation's Cup, the World Under 23 Regatta is recognized by FISA, the international rowing federation, as the official world championships in this category.
