Results Summary – July 26, 2002 World Under 23 Regatta (Genoa, Italy), July 25 to 28
Three Canadian crews kicked-off a weekend of racing at the World Under 23 Regatta - the top competition for the rowing stars of the future - in Genoa, Italy today.
The lightweight women's double of Lysanne Lavigne of Boucherville, Que. and Lindsay Jennerich of Victoria, B.C. placed first in today's heat in 7:14.70. The University of Victoria students were the fastest lightweight double overall today (there were two other heats) and advance directly to the semi-finals in their first international race as a crew.
Aaron Kroeker of St. Catharines, Ont. and Darryl DeLeeuw of Victoria, B.C., rowing in the heavyweight men's pair event, were fourth in their heat in 6:52.63 and must row in a repechage race for a chance to advance to the semis.
The men's single of David Marchioro of Burnaby, B.C. must also row the repechage after finishing sixth in his heat today in 7:38.90.
The Canadian men’s eight, lightweight men’s pair and women’s four will begin their racing tomorrow. Last year, the men’s eight brought home gold for Canada in the Under 23 category.
Formerly known as the Nations Cup, the World Under 23 Regatta is the most intense competition for top rowers younger than 23 years of age. Pre-elite rowers from 40 countries are participating in Italy.
The newly constructed Genoa regatta course is right on the Mediterranean and this regatta is its unveiling to the international rowing scene. A break-wall has been constructed to protect the course from wind speeds that can get up to 23 km/hr.
