INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Thirty-nine national titles were awarded on the final day of competition at the 2006 USRowing National Championship Regatta at Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis, Ind.
In competition for the Marion D. Ventura trophy given to the women's overall winner, Potomac Boat Club scored 196.50 points to defeat Pocock Elite Sculling Team with 195 points and Minneapolis Rowing Club with 124.75. The Sulger-Barnes Point Trophy for the men's team went to New York Athletic Club with 240.25 points. New York finished ahead of Vesper Boat Club with 152 points and Penn A.C. Rowing Association with 92 points. Thompson Boat Club won the overall points' trophy with 120.5 points.
Pocock Elite Sculling Team's Lindsay Meyer, who will represent the U.S. in the junior women's single sculls next month at the 2006 FISA World Rowing Junior Championships in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, won her second gold and third overall medal of the regatta in the women's senior single sculls. The Seattle native crossed the finish line with a time of 7:56.02, finishing 2.62 seconds ahead of Potomac Boat Club's Margaret Matia. Undine Barge Club's Shannon Kaplan finished third in a 7:58.94. On Saturday, Meyer won gold in the intermediate single sculls and silver in the elite/open single sculls.
Potomac Boat Club's Liz Mygatt and Margaret Matia won the women's elite/open double sculls by nearly five seconds over teammates Mae Joyce Gay and Ruth Stiver. Mygatt and Matia clocked a 7:15.51, while Gay and Stiver finished in a 7:20.50. Union Boat Club finished third with a time of 7:23.87.
Sarah Trowbridge joined Potomac teammates Matia, Stiver, and Mygatt to win gold in the women's senior quadruple sculls. Potomac finished with a time of 6:42:58, almost 16 seconds ahead of second-place New York Athletic Club. Three races later, Trowbridge, Matia, and Mygatt helped Potomac win silver in the women's elite/open eight.
The U.S. Junior Women's National Team dominated the competition in the women's elite/open eight, winning the gold at its last stop before the junior world championships. The boat clocked a 6:28:60 to defeat Potomac Boat Club by almost five seconds. UMass Development Camp and Potomac Boat Club-Composite battled it out for third with UMass pulling ahead in the last 100-meters. UMass finished with a final time of 6:36:03, just 0.13 seconds ahead of Potomac.
Detroit Boat Club's Katherine Bucien won the women's elite/open lightweight single sculls by 3.23 seconds. Bucien clocked a 7:57.30. GMS Rowing Center's Jeanette Saraidaridis finished second, followed by Pocock Elite Sculling Team's Alicia Cole.
In the men's elite/open single sculls, Bantam Boat Club's Thomas Graves defeated Jonathan Werner by more than four seconds. Graves stroked a 7:09.64, with Werner finishing in a 7:14.24. New York Athletic Club's Paul Antonik won the bronze medal.
Pocock Elite Sculling Team dominated the women's elite/open lightweight quadruple sculls, taking both gold and silver. The Pocock A quad of Michelle Trannel, Katherine Sweet, Anne Finke, and Abby Broughton pulled away in the last 500 meters to win the event by open water. With a time of 6:36:87, Pocock A finished 7.8 seconds ahead of Pocock B, who had a time of 6:44:67. New York Athletic Club came in third.
Steel City Rowing Club won the national championship in the junior women's quadruple sculls. The crew of Brittney Kelly, Suzanne Maddamma, Erin Dauson, and Briana Pittman crossed the finish line in a time of 7:11.43, finishing more than four seconds ahead of Austin Rowing Club Juniors. The Steel City boat will compete in the event at next month's junior world championships.
In the men's senior eight, Vesper Boat Club took the gold with a time of 5:39:86. Vesper pulled ahead in the last 500 meters to beat out the USRowing Midwest Development Camp, who finished second with a time of 5:45:23. New York Athletic Club rounded out the top three with a time of 5:51:03.
Other crews winning national titles on Sunday included New York Athletic Club in the men's intermediate quadruple sculls, men's intermediate four with coxswain, men's senior lightweight four with coxswain, women's senior lightweight double sculls, men's senior double sculls, and men's intermediate lightweight pair; U.S. Junior Women's Development Camp in the women's intermediate eight, women's junior B double sculls, women's junior four with coxswain, and women's junior B eight; USRowing Midwest Development Camp in the men's senior pair and men's elite/open four; Potomac Boat Club in the women's senior four; Pocock Elite Sculling Team in the women's intermediate lightweight quadruple sculls; Thompson Boat Center in the men's junior eight; Quad City Rowing Association in the men's junior B single sculls and men's junior double sculls; University of Massachusetts Development Camp in the women's intermediate double sculls; West Side Rowing Club in the men's junior B quadruple sculls; Durham Boat Club in the men's intermediate lightweight double sculls; Southeast Juniors in the women's intermediate lightweight four with coxswain; Minneapolis Rowing Club in the women's senior four with coxswain; UMass Development Camp in the women's intermediate lightweight single sculls; Saugatuck Rowing Club in the men's intermediate single sculls; U.S. Junior Women's National Team in the women's intermediate pair; Sammamish Rowing Association in the men's junior B quadruple sculls; Undine Barge Club in the women's elite/open single sculls - dash; and Berkeley Rowing Club in the men's elite/open single sculls - dash.
Hosted by USRowing and the Indianapolis Rowing Center, the five-day regatta featured approximately 1,200 rowers. The event includes elite, senior, intermediate and junior-level rowers representing more than 80 clubs from across the country competing for titles in more than 80 different events.
