INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Forty-one national titles were awarded on the first day of finals at the 2006 USRowing National Championship Regatta at Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis, Ind. Racing concludes on Sunday with the second day of finals.
Individually, Undine Barge Club's Shannon Kaplan came away with three medals during Saturday's finals. Kaplan won gold in the women's elite/open single sculls and the women's senior double sculls, and then claimed silver in the women's elite/open quadruple sculls.
In the women's elite/open single sculls, Kaplan clocked a 7:50:78 to defeat Pocock Elite Sculling Team's Lindsay Meyer by 1.59 seconds. Meyer sat in third place going into the final 250 meters but overtook Potomac Boat Club's Margaret Matia for the silver, finishing with a time of 7:52.37.
Kaplan came back later in the morning to win the women's senior double sculls final with partner Beth Greene. The duo stroked a 7:21.78 to defeat New York Athletic Club by 5.28 seconds. NYAC held off two Potomac Boat Club crews for second place, clocking a 7:27.06 to defeat the Potomac B boat by 0.59 seconds and the Potomac A boat by 0.68 seconds.
In the women's elite/open quadruple sculls, Kaplan and her Undine Barge Club teammates finished 1.52 seconds behind the Potomac Boat Club crew of Liz Mygatt, Sarah Trowbridge, Mae Joyce Gay, and Ruth Stiver. Potomac clocked a 6:33.10, while Undine finished with a time of 6:34.62.
For the four Potomac women, gold in the quad marked their second victory of the day. In the day's first race, the women's elite/open four, the quartet clocked a 6:52.95 to defeat the U.S. Junior National Team boat by nearly seven seconds. The junior national team boat, which finished with a time of 6:59:30, will compete in the women's four at the 2006 FISA World Rowing Junior Championships August 2-5 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Meyer, who won silver to Kaplan in the elite single, also came back in the afternoon to win another medal. This time, she claimed gold in the women's intermediate single sculls. Meyer, who will represent the U.S. at this year's junior world championships, crossed the finish line with a time of 7:59.52, finishing two seconds ahead of the University of Massachusetts Development Camp's Hannah Brewster.
Justin Stangel and Derek Rasmussen of the USRowing Midwest Development Camp took gold in the men's elite/open pair. With a time of 6:47:77, the crew defeated its Midwest Development Camp teammates, Matt Donoghue and Tom Peszek, by nearly three seconds.
In the women's elite/open lightweight double sculls, the Pocock Elite Sculling Team duo of Liz Patterson and Libby Peters defeated New York Athletic Club by more than eight seconds to win the gold medal. Pocock crossed the finish line with a time of 7:30.28, with NYAC finishing in a 7:38.94.
New York Athletic Club's Greg McClure and Sean Cefalo easily won the men's elite/open double sculls. The duo crossed the finish line in a time of 6:53.55, finishing more than 18 seconds ahead of the Southeast Juniors crew.
Later in the day, McClure and Cefalo teamed up with Paul Antonik and Edward Slater to win gold in the men's senior quadruple sculls. Finishing with a time of 6:22:78, the NYAC boat defeated second-place Potomac Boat Club by 10 seconds. Southeast Juniors placed third with a time of 6:40:75.
In the men's elite/open lightweight single sculls, Durham Boat Club's Tim Wong pulled away with the gold medal. With a 7:21:35, Wong narrowly escaped Jon Olson of Minneapolis Rowing Club who stroked a 7:23:05. Chris Lambert of the University of Central Florida took home the bronze.
Vesper Boat Club clocked a 5:41.92 to win the men's elite/open eight by more than five seconds over the USRowing Midwest Development Camp. Potomac Boat Club finished third.
Suzanne Maddamma of Steel City Rowing Club dominated the competition in the women's junior A single sculls, winning the gold with a time of 8:06:18. Maddamma is a member of the women's quadruple sculls boat that will compete at the 2006 FISA World Rowing Junior Championships in Amsterdam. Kansas City Rowing Club's Summers Nelson finished second with a time of 8:23:70.

Hosted by USRowing and the Indianapolis Rowing Center, the five-day regatta features approximately 1,200 rowers including several members of this year's junior national team. The event includes elite, senior, intermediate and junior-level rowers representing more than 80 clubs from across the country competing for titles in more than 80 different events.
