SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Sarah Cannon was recently named assistant women's rowing coach at Syracuse University. She replaces Craig Milburn who served as assistant coach for the Orange from the fall of 1994 until the spring of 2005.
Cannon's responsibilities will include recruiting, coaching the novice and assisting head coach Kris Sanford in all aspects of the program.
'Sarah is going to be a great fit for our program,'said Sanford. 'She is a very approachable, positive person who is extremely competitive and knows what it takes to be successful. She will be a huge asset to the program as we reach for the next level and work to achieve a top 10 finish every year at the NCAA Championships.'
Cannon comes to Syracuse from Connecticut College, where she spent three years as assistant women's rowing coach. Her third varsity eight won a gold medal at the 2003 New England Championship, while the novice eight she coached in 2004 made it to the grand final of the ECAC Championship. In 2005, Cannon's varsity four advanced to the petite final of the New England Championship.
She is currently serving as camp administrator/assistant coach at the U.S. Junior Women's Selection and Development Camp in New London, Conn. She will hold that position until August.
Prior to Connecticut College, Cannon worked for a year in the Seattle, Wash. area. She was an assistant account executive for Bondo & Remer, an advertising/marketing agency in Seattle and she also coached for the Lake Washington Rowing Club.
Cannon earned her bachelor's degree in geology from Bates College in 2000. She was captain of the rowing team at Bates from 1998-2000. She earned her team's Rookie of the Year award in 1997 and was MVP as a senior.
An active participant in professional development, Cannon attended the 2002 and 2003 Joy of Sculling Conferences in Saratoga Springs. While at Connecticut College, she took courses in education and biology.
Born in Arlington, Mass., Cannon attended Stadium High School in Tacoma, Washington and rowed for the Annie Wright School.
