USRowing has announced the 19 athletes who have made the 2002 Women’s Junior National Team. The U.S. will have five women’s crews racing at the 2002 FISA Junior World Championships August 7-11 in Trakai, Lithuania. Crews competing at the regatta include the junior women’s single sculls, junior women’s double sculls, junior women’s pair, junior women’s four and junior women’s eight.
The pair, four and eight were selected by the women’s junior national team coaching staff at the junior national team selection camp. The single and double sculls earned their right to compete at the junior world championships by winning the 2002 Junior National Team Selection Trials on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J., at the end of June.
Of the 19 women, two are returning junior national team members. Abby Loughrey is a three-time junior national team member, while Alexis Peterson is a two-time junior national team member. Peterson will compete in the junior women’s eight, while Loughrey will compete in the junior women’s single sculls.
At the 2001 Junior World Championships, the U.S. brought home a silver medal in the junior women’s four, while the junior women’s eight finished fifth. In the junior women’s pair, Peterson and Amanda Kendrick finished sixth and in the junior women’s double sculls, Loughrey and Heather Schofield finished 15th overall. USRowing will announce the men’s junior national team next week, as soon as the roster is finalized.
