Six crews will represent Canada at this year's World Under 23 Regatta in Genoa, Italy (July 25 to 28, 2002). The team includes a heavyweight men's eight, men's pair, men's single, lightweight men's pair, lightweight women's double and heavyweight women's four.
Last year, only two Canadian crews went to the World Under 23s, but the men's eight managed to bring home gold and will attempt to recapture the World title at the 2002 regatta.
"The early indication for the eight is that they are going as well, if not better, than last year's crew," says Tony Carr, Rowing Canada's heavyweight men's Under-23 coach. "There is no way of telling what the opposition has been doing, but we are looking at making a good showing in Genoa."
Members of the 2001 eight - Scott Frandsen, Neil Armour, Bradley Burns and Peter Dembicki - join newcomers Ian Harrison, Chris Jarvis, James Dunaway, Adam Gant and coxswain David Tso for this year's regatta. Sculler David Marchioro, who won the men's single at last month's Canadian Rowing Trials in Victoria, will represent Canada in the same event in Italy. Aaron Kroeker and Darryl DeLeeuw, a 2001 World Junior bronze medallist in the men's four, will team up in the men's pair. Dave Stephens and Mike Lewis, who rowed in the 2001 Under 23 lightweight men's four, will row as the lightweight pair this year. The lightweight coach is Howard Campbell of Victoria. University of Victoria students Lysanne Lavigne and Lindsay Jennerich will row in the lightweight women's double, the first international event for this combination. The women's four is Andréanne Morin, who rowed in last year's senior women's eight, with Zoe Hoskins, Ashley Brzozowicz and Adrienne Hunter, and is coached by Rick Crawley of Victoria.
For many elite rowers, the Under 23 program is an important step to the Canadian National Rowing Team (Senior A). Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) recognizes PacificSport Canadian Sport Centre – Victoria for its support of RCA’s development program.
Formerly called Nation's Cup, the World Under 23 Regatta is recognized by FISA, the international rowing federation, as the official world championships in this category.
