BOSTON - Boston University second-year head men's crew coach Thomas Bohrer has announced the addition of John Lindberg to his staff as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the 2009-10 season. Having over 20 years of experience at both the Division I collegiate and high school levels, he joins the team full-time after volunteering this past year with the Terriers.
"John will be a great addition to our staff," said Bohrer. "He volunteered during the spring season and was a big part of our success this year. His organizational skills and contacts in the rowing community will help boost our recruiting efforts to attract quality student-athletes. I feel our coaching styles complement each other, and I believe that we have all the tools in place to make Boston University men's crew a top Division I program."
This past season, the Terriers upset then-No. 2 Brown on May 27 during the Michalson Cup race for their first win against the Bears since 1987. They later made a last-minute charge in the semifinals of the IRA Championship to overtake fourth-ranked Wisconsin and reach the Grand Final for the first time since 2005. With the second varsity eight boat also reaching its respective Grand Final race at the IRAs, BU received the Clayton Chapman Award for the most improved team in the country.
Lindberg most recently served as an account executive with Resolute Racing Shells and will continue to serve an advisory role with the company. Prior to his work with Resolute, John headed up recruiting efforts and the freshman team at Northeastern for more than three years, enjoying medal-producing performances by the squads. He also served as a coach for the U.S. U23 World Championship competition.
First introduced to the sport of rowing as a student at St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, John was coached by master coach Rich Davis. Winning the Princess Elizabeth Cup as a member of the St. Paul's eight at the Henley Royal Regatta was one of the highlights of his early rowing experience. John continued rowing as an undergraduate at Brown University under the guidance of legendary coach Steve Gladstone. He subsequently represented the United States in the double sculls event at the 1991 Pan Am Games in Havana, Cuba, and continues to compete in masters sculling events. John and his wife of 21 years, Maria, have two young boys, Kurt and Carl.
