Racing kicked off this morning in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the Pan American Games regatta (July 14 to 19).
In two preliminary races for lanes, the men's and women's pairs easily took their races.
The men's pair of Chris Jarvis of St. Catharines, Ont. and Dan Casaca of Toronto was first in 6:43.28. The U.S., Cuba, Brazil, Mexico and Argentina followed the Canadians.
"We decided we needed to establish a good rhythm, especially in the second 500 metres. This was our first official race together and I think we sent a clear message that we are not here to play games, but to win," said Chris Jarvis, who has rowed in the pairs' event with a few different partners in the past, including the 2004 Olympics with Dave Calder. "It's amazing rowing here because in the last part of the race, you hear the Brazilians cheering for Canada. We feel very proud to be part of team Canada."
The women's pair of Zoe Hoskins of Edmonton, Alta. and Nathalie Maurer of North Vancouver, B.C. also finished first in today's race for lanes. Chile, Cuba and the U.S. rounded out the race.
The lightweight men's double of Andrew Borden of Toronto and John Haver of Saskatoon, Sask. was fourth and will row in a rep this afternoon. The U.S. took first place to advance directly to the A finals.
Canada has a total of eight crews participating in these Games.
Racing conditions were very good today at the Pan Am rowing course, which is set in a lagoon with stunning views of the famous Christ the Redeemer statue, atop Corcovado Mountain.
