Canada's men's eight moves to the semi finals after winning its heat today at the Lucerne World Cup in Switzerland (July 13 to 15)
Canada's heat-winning time was 5:38.42.
The men's eight, coming off a big win at British Henley last week, is Brian Price (cox) of Belleville, Ont., Kyle Hamilton of Richmond, B.C., Adam Kreek of London, Ont., Dominic Seiterle of Victoria, B.C., Malcolm Howard of Victoria, Jake Wetzel of Saskatoon, Sask., Andrew Byrnes of Toronto, Ont., Ben Rutledge of Cranbrook, B.C. and Kevin Light of Sidney, B.C. The Netherlands (in a photo finish with Russia) and Germany won the other heats to advance.
In the same race, Canada's Under-23 men's eight was fourth and will row in a rep to attempt to move forward. This younger crew is using Lucerne as a warm up for the Under-23 World Championships in Scotland later this month. The lightweight women's double of Tracy Cameron of Shubenacadie, N.S. and Lindsay Jennerich of Victoria move to the semi finals after a strong second-place showing today. Denmark won the heat in 7:08.03, followed by Canada in 7:09.15.
The men's pair of Scott Frandsen of Kelowna, B.C. and Barney Williams of Saltspring Island, B.C. was third (6:52.60) and will row in the rep later today. France and New Zealand finished ahead of the Canadians in their heat.
The men's quad was also third - Jamie Faris of Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., Steve Van Knotsenburg of Beamsville, Ont., Gabe Bergen of 100 Mile House, B.C., and Rob Weitemeyer of Coquitlam, B.C. finished in a time of 6:00.88.
The lightweight men's four (Iain Brambell of Victoria, Jon Beare of Toronto, Mike Lewis of Victoria and Liam Parsons of Thunder Bay, Ont.) was third in its heat (6:10.24) and will row in the rep. A second Canadian entry was fifth in another heat in 6:16.19. This additional entry is Canada's Under-23 lightweight men's four - Tim Myers of Penticton, B.C., Nick Pratt of Kingston, Ont., Josh Metcalfe of Walkerton, Ont., and Kurtis Boyd of Elizabethtown, Ont.
The lightweight men's double of Doug Vandor of Dewittville, Que. and Matt Jensen of Innerkip, Ont. was also third in 6:39.16 and row in the rep.
The Canadian men's four was sixth in its heat and must also row in the repechage round. Members of this four are Derek O'Farrell of Unionville, Ont., Rob Gibson of Kingston, Ont., Peter Dembicki of West Vancouver, B.C., and Kristopher Kip McDaniel of Cobble Hill, B.C.
Tim Colson of London, Ont., an under-23 athlete rowing in the lightweight men's single, was fourth in his heat in 7:17.73 and must row in the rep later today.
