The University of Minnesota Athletics Department and rowing head coach Wendy Davis announced today the hiring of John Flynn as the new assistant rowing coach. Flynn, who will primarily work with the novice team, will begin his responsibilities July 14.
Flynn was an assistant coach at Fairfield University (Conn.) in 2002-03 and the women's assistant coach for the New York Athletic Club team since 1998-2003. Flynn has coached at the national level as well, coaching the U.S. Lightweight Men's 8 team to a bronze medal in the 2002 World Championships. Flynn will serve as an assistant coach at the 2003 Pan American Games in Indianapolis, August 4-10, where he will be an assistant coach to the U.S. Lightweight Men's 4. Prior to his work with the U.S men's lightweight teams, Flynn was the freshmen coach at the College of William and Mary in 1994-95.
Flynn earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Cornell in 1994 and received his master of arts degree in English literature in 2000. Flynn was also an English teacher and a curriculum consultant at Regis High School (N.Y.) from 1996 to 2003 before accepting the Golden Gopher rowing position.
"We're very excited to have John as a part of our rowing staff," Davis said. "John brings great expertise to Gopher rowing and we feel that he can help us develop a strong novice program."
