CINCINNATI – The 2002 CanAmMex Camp will be held July 14-20 on Lake Harsha at East Fork State Park. CanAmMex is a weeklong junior development camp for athletes from Canada, Mexico and the United States that concludes with a regatta on Saturday, July 20.
Started in 1996, this will be the second time the U.S. has hosted the event, with the 1998 regatta being hosted just north of Cincinnati in Oxford, Ohio. One of the top venues in the country, Lake Harsha currently plays host to the USRowing Youth Invitational Regatta each summer. It also hosted 15 national collegiate championships in the 1980s and early 1990s.
Each country is allowed to send a maximum of 22 athletes to CanAmMex. The Canadian and Mexican squads are made up of those countries’ junior national team members, while the U.S. squad will be made up of junior development athletes not heading to the FISA Junior World Championships in August. The U.S. roster includes one local product from the Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club – Park Hills, Ky. native Liz Johnson. The regatta, which will include races in 12 boat classes, will be held Saturday, July 20.
In addition to rowing, the athletes also will be participating in several cross-cultural events, including a visit to Coney Island and a Cincinnati Reds game. A formal welcome dinner will be held Tuesday, July 16, with an awards dinner taking place following the racing on July 20. USRowing is the non-profit membership organization recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as the national governing body for the sport of rowing in the U.S. USRowing’s Official Patron is Concept2, its Official Electronics Outfitter is Nielsen Kellerman, and its Preferred Printer is Sport Graphics Printing.
