Six junior crews moved one race closer to the World Rowing Junior Championships team this morning on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J., with wins in the opening round of finals at trials.
In addition to junior racing, the final of the senior lightweight men’s single sculls is set following Tuesday’s semifinals. Cambridge Boat Club’s Andrew Campbell, Colorado Rowing’s Greg Ruckman, Craftsbury Sculling Center’s John Graves and Undine Barge Club’s Hugh Mcadam all advanced. Graves posted the fastest time with a 7:11.764.
Racing in a first of a possible series of three finals to determine a winner, crews in the junior men’s and women double sculls, junior men’s and women’s pair, and junior men’s and women’s single sculls eliminated one competitor from each event and advanced the first three to the next final.
To earn a berth on the junior team the will represent the United States next month in the World Rowing Senior and Junior Championships, August 14-19, in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, crews must win two of three races.
Advancing in the men’s junior double sculls was Narragansett Boat Club’s Chase Buchholz and Richard Wagner, Montclair High School’s Christophe Delaunay and William Burstein and Sarasota Crew’s Ben Delaney and Travis Taaffe. Narragansett finished with the best time in 6:51.635.
In the women’s junior double sculls, the USRowing Junior Women’s Sculling Selection Camp entry of Mackenzi Sherman and Olivia Maclean, the USRowing Junior Women’s Sculling Selection Camp crew of Jillian McGill and Caroline Heiderscheit and SoNo Rowing’s Olivia Clark and Robin Ritchey all advanced. Sherman and Maclean posted the best time with a 7:46.828.
From the first final of the junior men’s pair, the crews of USRowing Junior Men’s Selection Camp’s Aaron Mcavey and John Chuter, Montclair High School Justin Murphy and Nathaniel Goodman, USRowing Junior Men’s Selection Camp’s Scott Kennedy and Allen Reitz all advanced. The best time of the first final was Mcavey and Chuter’s 7:06.891.
The junior women’s pair followed with the crews of USRowing Junior Women’s Selection Camp’s Kathryn Brown and Christine Cavallo, Saratoga Springs High School/Saratoga Rowing Association’s Caroline Murphy and Alexis Georgia and USRowing Junior Women’s Selection Camp’s Lydia Keating and Kathleen O'Connell advanced. The best time of the race was rowed by Brown and Cavallo in 7:53.890.
In the men’s junior single first final, Maritime Rowing Club’s Graham Mink, Nereid Boat Club’s Anthony Criscitiello and Miami Beach Rowing Club’s Max Ferguson advanced with Mink posting the fastest time in 7:25.744.
The final junior event of the morning, the women’s single saw USRowing Junior Women’s Selection Camp’s Nina Vascotto, USRowing Junior Women’s Selection Camp’s Danielle Struck and Eliza Frank all advance. Vascotto rowed the best time in 8:19.525.
Racing will resume at 5 p.m. with the second round of junior finals.
