Bob and Peg Morro, two long time stalwarts in events along Boat House Row, received the Malta Boat club's top award last week for long time service and volunteer work to the rowing community particularly the Dad Vail Regatta and other competitive rowing events that take place annually on the Schuylkill River course.
The Award is named for early Malta Boat club member, Dr. George Morton Illman, and seeks to recognize individuals whose efforts behind the scenes make rowing events possible along Philadelphia's nationally renowned Schuylkill River. The award will be made at Malta Boat club at Number Nine Kelly Drive.
After graduating from LaSalle University in the late 1950's Bob began a relationship with Malta and rowing primarily as an organizer and official of the Dad Vail Regatta. He presently is Secretary of the Dad Vail and is the prime liaison officer of the regatta with all entrants. This year the Dad Vail, already the largest collegiate regatta anywhere, attracted 127 schools to the Schuylkill.
In 1990, Bob became the chief organizer of the United States Dragon Boats Federation (USDBF) and helped organize the 4th World Dragon Boat Championship here in Philadelphia. The event attracted squads from seventeen countries over the five day regatta in August of 2001.
Between 2003 and 2005, Bob was the North American Continental Representative to the IDBF. Two years later he was elected Vice President of the IDBF in Berlin.
In his spare time he conducts referee classes for DB officials along with Dave McCormick and his wife, Peg who has been an active participant in rowing events as an official and organizer for 25 years accompanying husband Bob is all his activities and IDBF events.
While Peg's biggest involvement is with the Dad Vail, she participants in such other events as the Scholastic Rowing Association, the Frostbite Regatta, the Head of the Schuylkill, and the Bayada Disabled Regatta.
She wears many hats ranging from administrative assistant to program salesperson to concierge (for coaches with questions about hotel reservations in Philadelphia) and has been known to substitute for Bob when an answer is needed and he's unavailable.
Peg also in an official of the IDBF The Morros have six children and live at 711 Lindale Ave., in Drexel Hill.
Malta Boat club was founded in 1860 and is a member of the Schuylkill Navy, the oldest amateur athletic governing body in the United States.
