National titles in 13 events were awarded on Sunday at the 2008 USRowing National Championships at Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.
In addition to racing for national titles, rowers in the adaptive events were racing for spots on the 2008 Paralympic Team.
In the men's adaptive single sculls, Long Beach Rowing Association's Ron Harvey earned his Paralympic berth by clocking a 5:31.71. Harvey, a five-time adaptive national team member, finished more than 13 seconds ahead of Rowing Canada Aviron's Steve Daniel. Rowing Canada's Peter Morel finished third, followed by Jerry Newman, the other U.S. entry.
Rowing uncontested in the women's adaptive single sculls, Philadelphia Rowing Program for the Disabled's Laura Schwanger crossed the finish line in a 6:00.71 to secure her berth on the Paralympic squad. Schwanger is now a two-time adaptive national team member, having competed in the single at last year's world championships.
In the trunk-arms double sculls, Philadelphia Rowing Program for the Disabled's Scott Brown and Angela Madsen finished first in a 4:32.65, claiming a spot on the Paralympic squad. Rowing Canada's Wilfredo More Wilson and Caitlin Renneson came in second with a 4:39.29. Another PRPD crew, comprised of Bradley Johnson and Cathryn Reynolds, crossed the line in a 6:47.43 to take third.
In the leg-trunk-arms four with coxswain, Philadelphia Rowing Program for the Disabled's boat of Simona Chin, Jamie Dean, Jesse Karmazin, Tracy Tackett and Emma Preuschl finished with a time of 3:38.86 to finish a little more than one second ahead of Rowing Canada, which clocked a 3:40.14. The PRPD boat was named to the Paralympic team in early June.
A margin of 0.33 seconds separated the top two finishers in the lightweight men's single sculls. Undine Barge Club's Greg Kaplan won gold, posting a 7:21.59. Riverside Boat Club's Andrew Hashway walked away with silver, while GMS Rowing Center's Matt Carey finished third in a 7:26.34.
It was another close battle for first in the lightweight women's single sculls, as Union Boat Club's Catherine Infantino crossed the line 0.72 seconds ahead of New York Athletic Club's Margaret Duggan. Infantino finished in a 7:58.74. Vesper Boat Club's Nicole Nelson finished just behind, winning bronze with an 8:01.86.
Pockock Rowing Center's Ursula James finished in a 7:40.89, winning the women's single sculls. Potomac Boat Club's Reilly Dampeer finished second with a time of 7:44.28, while Undine Barge Club's Meghan Sarbanis finished third with a 7:45.63.
New York Athletic Club's James Dietz II won the men's single sculls with a time of 7:19.24. Minneapolis Rowing Club's Zachary Ellison finished in a 7:21.53 to claim second. Vesper Boat Club's Ben Churchill edged out teammate Joseph Krajewski to win bronze, posting a 7:24.25.
In a race featuring only two crews, Vesper Boat Club finished lengths ahead of Pocock Rowing Center to win the lightweight women's quadruple sculls. The Vesper crew, comprised of Hannah Moore, Rebecca Smith, Wendy Tripician and Libby Peters, finished in a 6:44.27. The Pocock crew of Alicia Cole, Lindsey Hochman, Michelle Trannel and Elisabeth Patterson finished nearly 13 seconds behind.
Undine Barge Club also finished lengths ahead of Potomac Boat Club to win the women's double sculls. Meghan Sarbanis and Catherine Reddick crossed the line in a 7:25.50, with Reilly Dampeer and Nicky Sherry finishing 11 seconds later to take silver. Vesper Boat Club's Rebecca Smith and Hannah Moore came in third, posting a 7:38.95.
The men's double sculls saw a close fight for first place. Riverside Boat Club's Andrew Hashway and Sean Wolf were victorious, crossing the line in a 6:45.37. New York Athletic Club's Ellis Evans-Brown and Jens Robatzek finished one second later to claim second. Vesper Boat Club's James Dietz and Ben Churchill took the bronze, finishing three seconds behind first.
Vesper Boat Club's Libby Peters and Wendy Tripician won the lightweight women's double sculls with a time of 7:23.38. Pocock Rowing Center's Elisabeth Patterson and Michelle Trannel finished second in a 7:33.51, followed by New York Athletic Club's Margaret Duggan and Fiona Augar.
Racing uncontested, GMS Rowing Center's Matt Carey and Richard Klein won the lightweight men's double sculls with a time of 6:51.92.
