WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Racing at the 2014 USRowing National Championships kicked off Wednesday afternoon with time trials in three boat classes.
The three-day event runs June 25-27, on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J., and features elite-level competition in 18 events, with more than 132 entries from 33 clubs in 13 states from the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.
The top 12 finishers in the men’s and women’s single sculls and lightweight men’s single sculls on Wednesday advanced to Thursday morning’s heats.
In the women’s single sculls, Beijing Olympic quadruple sculler Lindsay Meyer (Seattle, Wash.), rowing for Seattle Rowing Center, completed the course in a 7:36.447. California Rowing Club’s Ann Holmes posted the second fastest time in a 7:43.831, followed by Craftsbury Sculling Center’s Keziah Beall in 7:46.059.
Meyer returned after a short weather delay to win the women’s double sculls event with Vesper Boat Club’s Nicole Ritchie (Putney, Vt.). The composite crew finished with a time of 7:04.700.
“The races were good,” said Meyer, following her second time trial of the evening. “It was fun to get back out there and lay something down. It’s been about a month or so. I came here to go down the course as many times as I can, and just race, because that’s the fun part.
“This event is kinda cool because I think pretty much everyone out there in the double was also out there in the single, so it’s nice to know that everyone’s doing the same thing. It’s almost easier having gone down the course once already, because you’re sort of familiar with it. It’s fun being in the double having someone there pulling with you, and it makes the turnaround easier. Once you’re done with one, you can focus on the other (race).”
Potomac Boat Club’s Willy Cowles (Farmington, Conn.) won the time trial of the men’s single sculls. Cowles finished in 7:05.806, followed by Vesper Boat Club’s Yohann Rigogne (Besançon, France) in 7:07.886.
Racing at the 2014 USRowing National Championships continues Thursday morning at 8 a.m., with heats in the men’s and women’s single sculls, lightweight men’s and women’s single sculls and men’s and women’s double sculls.
