WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Seventeen crews earned places on the squads that will represent the United States at the 2014 World Rowing Championships and 2014 World Rowing Under 23 Championships at the combined Senior 1 and Under 23 World Championship Trials on Mercer Lake Wednesday morning.
Winners in nine events at the under 23 level, and eight events at the senior level, all earned berths on their respective teams. Senior level winners will compete August 24-31 at the 2014 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Winners of the under 23 level events will compete July 23-27 at the 2014 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Varese, Italy.
In the first event of the day, the senior men’s quadruple sculls, Craftsbury Sculling Center’s Peter Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio), Stephen Whelpley (Moquon, Wis.), John Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Benjamin Dann (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) won the two boat race in 5:54.40 over the California Rowing Club.
“We spent the last month and a half in the quad,” said Whelpley, who won the single sculls event at 2014 National Selection Regatta 1. “We figured we had four fast guys that made two fast doubles and we have a new boat, so the pieces just kind of added up.
“It was different for us, going into this race. We knew we had done some solid preparation, but at the same time, it was a one and done, so we definitely had some nerves on board. But we were rewarded for the preparation we did and pretty happy and humbled by the result.”
Next up was the senior men’s pair with coxswain final. Winning that event in a time of 7:23.94 was the crew of coxswain Jack Carlson (Weston, Mass.), Taylor Brown (Winter Park, Fla.) and Henry Hoffstot (Ligonier, Pa.).
In the senior lightweight men’s pair, the USRowing Oklahoma City Training Center crew of Michael Wales (Seattle, Wash.) and Tyler Nase (Phoenixville, Pa.) won the two boat race in a time of 6:50.50.
Earning a berth to the senior team in the lightweight men’s quadruple sculls was the Riverside Boat Club crew of Andrew Neils (Manhattan, Kansas), Peter Schmidt (Providence, R.I.), Jacob Georgeson (North Olmsted, Ohio) and Kyle Lafferty (Hockessin, Del.). The Riverside crew defeated the entry from the Malta Boat Club in a time of 6:08.68.
Following the men, and earning places on the national team was the senior lightweight women’s quadruple sculls composite entry of Hillary Saeger (Dedham, Mass.), Helen Tompkins (Friendswood, Texas.), Sarah Giancola (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Mary Jones (Huntsville, Ala.). The combined crew, representing Vesper Boat Club, Seattle Rowing Center, GMS Rowing Center and Riverside Boat Club, won in a time of 6:44.96.
Following his under 23 trials victory in the lightweight men’s single sculls, Andrew Campbell (New Canaan, Conn.) won the event in the senior men’s lightweight single and will compete at both world championships. Campbell crossed in a time of 7:04.17.
“This was good,” Campbell said. “It was good to go down the course in the single. I definitely feel like I have a lot more in me, and I’ll go back to Boston and start working with Charley Butt after Henley and hopefully kind of get some of the light sharpness we had going last summer.”
In the senior lightweight men’s eight, the Oklahoma City Riversport entry of coxswain Stephen Young (Tampa, Fla.), Kyle Traub (Eastham, Mass.), Andrew Hakanson (Newtown Square, Pa.), Josh Getz (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Matthew O’Leary (Westwood, Mass.), Joseph Hanlon (Washington D.C.), Dan Kirrane (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), Peter Gibson (Belmont, Mass.) and Andrew Weiland (Upper Arlington, Ohio) rowed uncontested and clocked a time of 5:57.16.
In the final senior event of the day, the lightweight women’s single sculls, Kate Bertko (Oakland, Calif.) won in a time of 7:45.23. Finishing second in 7:53.60 was Kristin Hedstrom (Concord, Mass.).

In the under 23 lightweight men’s pair, the Hobart College entry of Robert McNamara (Lexington, Mass) and August Wherry (Buford, Ga.) won in a time of 6:57.98.
The under 23 lightweight women’s double sculls, the Sarasota Crew entry of Devin Norder (Sarasota, Fla.) and Shawna Sims (Sarasota, Fla.) earned a place on the under 23 squad when they won their event in 7:21.68.
