The Canadian National Team camp men's eight and lightweight men's four are heading to England next weekend to participate in the Henley Royal Regatta (July 3 to 7, 2002) in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.
The men's eight, coached by Mike Spracklen who is British and a veteran Henley observer, will be rowing under the name of Victoria City Rowing Club and the University of Victoria. The eight will be rowing for the Grand Challenge Cup, which dates from 1839, when the organizers resolved that a silver cup - valued at 100 guineas and to be called the "Henley Grand Challenge Cup" - be rowed for annually by amateur crews in eight-oared boats.
Crew members of the men’s eight: Andrew Hoskins (Edmonton, Alta.) Kyle Hamilton (Richmond, B.C.) Adam Kreek (London, Ont.) Kevin Light (Sidney, B.C.) Jeff Powell (Winnipeg, Man.) Ben Rutledge (Victoria, B.C) Joe Stankevicius (Dundas, Ont.) Matt Swick (St. Catharines, Ont.) Brian Price (coxswain, Belleville, Ont.)
The National Team lightweight men's four, coached by former Olympic gold-medal (’92) coxswain Terry Paul, will be rowing in the Steward's Challenge Cup, which dates back to 1841 - second only in history to the Grand Challenge. The event is not limited to lightweight crews. The four will row as the Gorge Rowing Centre, Victoria.
Crew members of the lightweight men’s four: Doug Vandor (Dewittville, Que.) Jon Mandick (Victoria, B.C.) Iain Brambell (Brentwood Bay, B.C.) Gavin Hassett (Victoria B.C.)
