INDIANAPOLIS - Racing got underway in seven events Saturday on the first day of competition at the 2003 Pan American Games Team Trials at Eagle Creek Park. Winners of the trials earn the right to represent the United States at the 2003 Pan American Games to be held August 4-10 on Rincon Lake outside of Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic.
In the first heat of the women's double sculls, 2000 Olympian Carol Skricki and partner Anne Browning from Pocock Rowing Center clocked a 7:07.09 to outdistance Princeton Training Center's Frederique Garnier and Lia Pernell by more than 13 seconds. Augusta Training Center's Lisa Johnson and Beth Greene clocked an identical time to Skricki and Browning in winning the third heat, while Potomac Boat Club's Katie Madigan and Catherine Humblet won the second heat in a time of 7:18.49. Augusta Rowing Center's Sam Byrd and Katie Buttine finished second in the second heat, while Saugatuck's Sharon Kriz and Nicole Sylvester finished second in the third heat. The top two finishers from the heats and the top two finishers from Saturday afternoon's repechage, or second-chance race, all advanced to Sunday morning's semifinals.
In the men's single sculls, Ann Arbor Rowing Club's Mike Perry clocked the fastest time of the afternoon. In the fourth of four heats, Perry stroked a 7:03.20 to defeat New York Athletic Club's Andrew Liverman by less than two seconds. Undine Barge Club's Ferdinand Bergen, Augusta Rowing Club's Jon Werner and Potomac's Patrick O'Hea won the other heats. The heat winners advanced to Sunday afternoon's semifinals. They will be joined by the four winners of Sunday morning's repechages.
The second heat of the lightweight men's double sculls was considerably faster than the first, as Lake Washington Rowing Club's Tyler Peterson and Evans Jacobs clocked a 6:39:12 to finish more than seven seconds ahead of Undine's A boat of Greg Kaplan and Tom Sullivan. Undine's B boat of Jon D'Alba and Sean Maloney stroked a 6:47:10 to win heat one, joining Peterson and Jacobs in Monday's first final. Kaplan and Sullivan, along with the crews from Ann Arbor Rowing Club, Cincinnati Rowing Club and the unaffiliated duo of Tamas Toro and Evan Gibson, advanced to the tomorrow morning's repechage.
In the second heat of the lightweight women's double sculls, Princeton's Michelle Borkhuis and Maria Picone stroked the event's fastest time of 7:09:96, finishing only 2.58 seconds ahead of Pocock/Potomac's Julie Nichols and Ale Phillips. Austin Rowing Club's Amy Scott and Monica Downer won the first heat, clocking 7:24:52. The two heat winners advanced to Monday's first final, while the remaining crews will race in tomorrow's repechage.
The first heat of the lightweight women's single sculls was easily won by unaffiliated rower Melissa Rice, finishing in a time of 7:57:19. University of Dayton's Trish Miles finished 10 seconds behind, followed by Pocock's Briana Beacom. The second heat was a much closer race as Cambridge Boat Club's Abigail Cromwell crossed a mere 0.59 seconds ahead of Union Boat Club's Catherine Infantino. Both Cromwell and Rice advanced to Monday's first final. The remaining scullers will race in tomorrow's repechage.
Qualifying for the men's pair first final in the first heat was California's Graham Taylor and Eric Tiret, who crossed the line in a 6:47:26. They will be joined in the first final by Princeton's Andrew Brennan and Justin Jones, who won the second heat in a time of 6:45:25. The remaining crews will race in tomorrow's repechage.
In the women's single sculls, Ala Piotrowski and Cindy Bishop won the two heats. Piotrowski clocked an 8:02.74 to win the first heat, while Bishop clocked a 7:57.11 to win the second heat. The two scullers advanced to Monday's first final. The remaining crews will race in a repechage tomorrow for the right to advance to the first final.
Twelve events are being contested at the team trials including the women's single sculls, men's single sculls, lightweight women's single sculls, lightweight women's double sculls, women's double sculls, men's double sculls, lightweight men's double sculls, lightweight women's quadruple sculls, lightweight men's quadruple sculls, men's pair, men's four, and lightweight men's four.
In addition, the Pan American Games' crews in the men's quadruple sculls and men's eight will be selected during the trials. The winner of the men's double sculls and the top two finishers in the men's single sculls will make up the men's quad, while the winner of the men's four and the top two finishers in the men's pair will make up the men's eight.
