PRINCETON, N.J. – Seven United States athletes will attempt to secure a spot on the team that will race in this summer’s world championships when they compete at the second Samsung World Rowing Cup at Eton Dorney this weekend.
Competition will begin at the site of the 2012 Olympic Games on June 21 and conclude June 23. The U.S. will feature crews in the men’s and women’s single sculls, lightweight men’s single sculls and lightweight men’s double sculls. In the adaptive events, the U.S. will have an entry in the truck and arms mixed double sculls.
A top four placement in their respective events will be enough to secure those crews a spot on the team that will compete at the 2013 World Rowing Championships in Chungju, South Korea, August 25-September 1.
Rowing in the men’s single will be John Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio). Graves earned the opportunity to compete in the regatta with his win at the 2013 National Selection Regatta #1. This will be his first international appearance at the senior level.
He has previously competed on U.S. under 23 teams, where he finished 11th in the lightweight single in 2010 and 13th in the pair in 2009. He will be facing seasoned racers in the field of 18, including London silver medalist Ondrei Synek of the Czech Republic and London bronze medalist Alan Campbell of Great Britain.
Returning to the racecourse where she won her second Olympic gold medal in the women’s eight will be Eleanor Logan (Boothbay Harbor, Maine). Logan will be rowing in the women’s single event. Sculling for the first time in her international career this spring, Logan won bronze in the event and silver in the quadruple sculls at the 2013 Samsung World Rowing Cup I.
She will be among 16 women competing in the event including New Zealand’s Emma Twigg, who finished fourth in London, 2010 world champion Frida Svensson of Sweden and Austria’s Magdalena Lobnig, who was second at the 2013 European Rowing Championships.
Rowing in the lightweight men’s single will be Hugh McAdam (Philadelphia, Pa.). McAdam will be competing in a field of 19 scullers, including Duncan Grant of New Zealand, who won the first world cup in the event and took bronze at the world championships on Lake Bled in 2011.
In the lightweight double sculls, the U.S. will send the crew of Peter Alter (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Colin Ethridge (Laytonsville, Md.). It will face 16 crews, some of which feature 2012 Olympians including Germany’s Lars Hartig and Norway’s Kristoffer Brunn.
In the trunk and arms mixed double, the U.S. team of Rob Jones (Lovettsville, Va.) and Oksana Masters (Louisville, Ky.) will return to the sight of the 2012 Paralympic Games, where the crew won a bronze medal in the event. There will be six crews racing, including the 2012 Paralympic silver-medal team of France – Perle Bouge and Stephane Tardieu.
U.S. crews that finish in the top four or top half of the field will earn a berth on the team that will compete at the World Rowing Championships August 25-September 1 in Chungju, South Korea.
