Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) today announced the athletes that will represent Canada at the 2008 FISA World Cup #2 (Lucerne, Switzerland, May 30 to June 1).
The following Canadian boats will compete at Lucerne and select crews will also compete at World Cup #3 (Poznan, Poland, June 20 to 22).
Crews that have yet to qualify for the Summer Olympics will also attend the final FISA Olympic Qualification competition, to be held June 15 to 18 in Poznan (final line up to be announced).
All athletes and crews selected to compete in the World Cup circuit have met specific domestic performance criteria. "It is very encouraging to see the depth of strength shown in each of our programs as we prepare for the World Cups and ultimately for Beijing," said Phil Monckton, RCA Vice President High Performance. "It is our expectation to place all our crews in the finals of the Olympic Games regatta, and we feel that we are on track at this point in the season."
To date, five boats (men's eight, lightweight men's four, lightweight women's double, women's quad and women's pair) have met the Olympic qualification standard based on results at the 2007 World Rowing Championships. Final nomination of athletes and crews to the Canadian Olympic Committee will occur on June 24th.
