Canada kicked off its international rowing season today with six crews racing at the Rowing World Cup in Banyoles, Spain (May 29 to 31, 2009).
The Canadian lightweight men's double of Doug Vandor of Dewittville, Que., and Cam Sylvester of Caledon, Ont. finished first in 6:31.87 in today's heat - the crew advances to the semi-final. Both Sylvester and Vandor were on the 2008 Olympic Team.
The Canadian pair of Derek O'Farrell of Unionville, Ont. and James Dunaway of Duncan, B.C. finished first in 6:39.94 in today's heat, ahead of Greece (6:40.33) and Serbia (6:40.36). The Canadians move to the semi-finals.
"The first World Cup of a new quadrennial is always full of unknowns," said High Performance Director Peter Cookson. "For some of our crews, it was a great start to the year, while for others they have another chance tomorrow to make some changes and find more speed. The team is feeling good and all are ready to fire again tomorrow."
The lightweight women's double of Lindsay Jennerich of Victoria, B.C. and Sheryl Preston of North Delta, B.C. were third in the heat in 7:12.91 - they row in a repechage race tomorrow.
Fraser Berkhout of St. Catharines, Ont., finished fourth in his heat in the men's single, and third in his rep in 6:59.24, and will row in the C final.
The lightweight men's four was sixth in the heat in 6:23.27. Mike Lewis of Victoria, John Sasi of North Delta, B.C., Terry McKall of Edmonton, Alta., and Tim Myers of Penticton, B.C. will row in a rep tomorrow.
The lightweight men's pair of Simon Gowdy of Montreal, Que., and Josh Metcalfe of Walkerton, Ont. was sixth in the heat in 7:02.12. The rep for this event will be held tomorrow.
The men's quad, containing Olympic gold medalist (men's eight, 2008) Andrew Byrnes, will row in a straight final on Sunday. Full reports and results at www.worldrowing.com
