The U.S. women's pair and women's single sculls finished fifth in Saturdays finals to highlight the last day of competition at the 2006 World Cup Regatta stop in Munich, Germany.
The women's pair of Anna Mickelson (Bellevue, Wash.) and Megan Cooke (Los Gatos, Calif.) finished fifth in the final, clocking a 7:22.37 to finish 5.01 seconds behind the winners from Canada. The Canadian duo of Jane Rumball and Darcy Marquardt took control of the race early, grabbing a three-second lead in the first 500 meters. The U.S. pair got off the line well and sat in third place at the 500-meter mark, battling Germany and Australia for position behind Canada. However, Mickelson and Cooke were unable to maintain that position in the second quarter of the race and dropped to fifth. Canada won the race with a time of 7:17.36. Germanys Elke Hipler and Christina Gerking finished second in a 7:20.11, followed by Australias Kate Hornsey and Amber Bradley in a 7:20.36. Germanys other boat finished fourth, with Australias second crew finishing sixth.
Michelle Guerette (Bristol, Conn.), who won a bronze medal at the 2005 World Championships, also finished fifth in the final of the women's single sculls. Guerette sat in sixth position off the start but worked her way into fourth place at the midway point of the race. However, she was never able to challenge for a medal position and fell to fifth place over the final 1,000 meters. Guerette crossed the finish line with a time of 7:46.01. Belarus Ekaterina Karsten won the race, clocking a 7:30.40. The Czech Republics Mirka Knapkova finished in second place in a 7:34.30, while Frances Sophie Balmary finished third just 0.08 seconds behind Knapkova. Russians Julia Levina and Irina Fedotova finished fourth and sixth, respectively.
The women's double sculls tandem of Susan Francia (Abington, Pa.) and Brett Sickler (Los Gatos, Calif.) finished second in the B final for an eighth-place overall finish. Francia and Sickler led the race through the first 1,000 meters before Italy took the lead in the third quarter of the race. The U.S. duo clocked a 7:25.89 to finish 1.6 seconds behind the winners from Italy.
The other U.S. pair of Anna Goodale (Camden, Maine) and Lindsay Shoop (Charlottesville, Va.) finished fifth in the B final for an 11th-place overall finish. The duo led the race off the start and held a slight lead at the 500-meter mark. However, Goodale and Shoop dropped to fifth in the second quarter of the race, a place they maintained the rest of the way down the course. The pair stroked a 7:40.60 to finish nearly 10 seconds behind the winning duo of Romina Stefancic and Heather Mandoli from Canada.
