The U.S. womens pair and womens single sculls advanced to Saturdays finals to highlight the second day of competition at the 2006 World Cup Regatta stop in Munich, Germany.
The womens pair of Anna Mickelson (Bellevue, Wash.) and Megan Cooke (Los Gatos, Calif.) won their semifinal on Friday to advance to Saturdays final. Racing in the first semifinal, the duo led the race from start to finish, clocking a 7:14.22. Germany finished second in a 7:15.43, followed by Australia.
Unfortunately, the other U.S. pair of Anna Goodale (Camden, Maine) and Lindsay Shoop (Charlottesville, Va.) finished sixth in the second semifinal and will now race in the B final for places 7-12. The duo clocked a 7:34.71. Canada won the second semifinal in a time of 7:10.22, followed by Germany and Australia.
Michelle Guerette (Bristol, Conn.), who won a bronze medal at the 2005 World Championships, advanced to Saturdays final of the womens single sculls by finishing third in her semifinal. Racing in the first of two semis, Guerette clocked a 7:42.45 to finish 7.36 seconds behind Belarus Ekaterina Karsten. Russias Irina Fedotova finished second. In the other semifinal, the Czech Republics Mirka Knapkova crossed the finish line with a time of 7:28.96. Frances Sophie Balmary finished second, followed by Russias Julia Levina.
The womens double sculls tandem of Susan Francia (Abington, Pa.) and Brett Sickler (Los Gatos, Calif.) finished fifth in its semifinal and will now race in Saturdays B final for places 7-12. The duo clocked a 7:06.53 to finish nine seconds behind the race winners from Great Britain and 5.45 seconds behind the Czech Republic for the third and last qualification spot. Great Britain won the semifinal with a time of 6:57.68.
