PRINCETON, N.J. - Finals in four events are set for Saturday, May 17, following a morning of semifinals and the final of the lightweight men’s double sculls Friday at the 2014 National Selection Regatta 2 on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.
Winning crews in the men’s and women’s double sculls, men’s pair and lightweight men’s and women’s double sculls here at NSR 2 will have the opportunity to race at a World Rowing Cup event and earn a spot on the team that will represent the U.S. at the 2014 World Rowing Championships, August 24-31, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Taking that step today was the Cambridge Boat Club-Green Racing Project composite entry of Austin Meyer (Cohoes, N.Y.) and Joshua Konieczny (Millbury, Ohio), who won the final of the lightweight men’s double in 7:09.81.
Meyer, who finished 12th in the event at the 2013 World Rowing Championships and Konieczny, who finished sixth in the lightweight four at the 2013 World Rowing Under 23 Championships, crossed nearly 15 seconds ahead of Craftsbury Sculling Center’s Hugh McAdam (Grantham, N.H.) and Kyle Lafferty (Hockessin, Del.).
In semifinals competition, the women’s double sculls event was the first to the line. The Southern California Scullers Club-Cambridge Boat Club composite entry of Stesha Carle (Long Beach, Calif.) and London Olympian and NSR 1 single winner, Gevvie Stone (Newton, Mass.) posted the fastest time in the second semifinal with a 7:56.50. In the first race, USRowing Training Center - Oklahoma City Beijing Olympian Ellen Tomek (Flushing, Mich.) and teammate Meghan O’Leary (Baton Rouge, La.) won in a 7:58.45. The final is scheduled for Saturday at 7 a.m.
In the men’s double sculls, Craftsbury Sculling Center’s Benjamin Dann (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) and John Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio) posted the fastest time of 7:14.64. Dann and Graves, who also won Thursday’s time trial, finished 10th in the event at the 2013 World Rowing Championships. Craftsbury’s Stephen Whelpley (Mequon, Wis.), who finished 13th in the single at the 2013 world championships and won the men’s single event at NSR 1, and London Olympian Peter Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio) won the second semifinal in 7:20.09. The final of the men’s double is scheduled to begin Saturday at 7:10 a.m.
Next up, sporting bright pink shirts with “MURI” on the front, the men’s pairs from the USRowing Training Center - Princeton showed their support for Harvard University lightweight men’s coach Linda Muri, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in March.
USTC - Princeton’s Henrik Rummel (Pittsford, N.Y.) and Seth Weil (Menlo Park, Calif.) won the first semifinal of the men’s pair in 7:18.99 over teammates Tom Peszek (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and Michael Gennaro (Havertown, Pa.). In the second semifinal, USTC - Princeton’s Tom Dethlefs (Lawrenceville, N.J.) and Nareg Guregian (North Hills, Calif.) won in a 7:32.72 over teammates Matthew Miller (Springfield, Va.) and Rob Munn (Redmond, Wash.). The men’s pair final is scheduled for Saturday at 7:20 a.m.
In the semifinals of the lightweight women’s double sculls, it was California Rowing Club’s Kate Bertko (Oakland, Calif.) and Kristin Hedstrom (Concord, Mass.) who posted the fastest time in the first race with a time of 8:08.79. Bertko, a four-time national team athlete and 2013 USRowing Female Athlete of the Year, and London Olympian Hedstrom won silver in this event at the 2013 World Rowing Championships.
Michelle Sechser (Folsom, Calif.) and Devery Karz (Park City, Utah) of USRowing Training Center - Oklahoma City won the second semifinal in 8:16.83. Sechser finished seventh in the lightweight women’s single at the 2013 World Rowing Championships and won the event at the 2014 NSR 1. The final of the lightweight women’s double is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
