Opening time trials for the 2013 National Selection Regatta # 2 took place Thursday morning on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J., under hazy skies and on still, flat water.
Some 110 athletes from 18 clubs are competing in six selection events and one speed order event. The winners of the selection events will earn the right to compete at one or both of the scheduled World Rowing Cup events and, if the crew finishes in the top four or top half of the field, earn a berth on the team that will compete at the 2013 World Rowing Championships August 25-September 1 in Chungju, South Korea.
Men’s Double Sculls
Of the 11 crews racing in the men’s double, Potomac Boat Club’s Matt Miller and Willie Cowles (Farmington, Conn.) rowed the fastest time over the 1,900-meter distance, finishing in 6:09.24. They were followed in second by Craftsbury Sculling Center’s Ben Dann (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) and John Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio), who finished in a time of 6:15.04.
Finishing third in the event was Bantam Boat Club’s entry of brothers Thomas Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Peter Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio) who rowed the course in a time of 6:20.71.
Women’s Double Sculls
Leading the way in the women’s double was the USRowing Training Center – Princeton crew of Ellen Tomek (Flushing, Mich.) and Meghan O’Leary (Baton Rouge, La.). Tomek, a Beijing Olympian in the event, and O’Leary rowed the course in 6:44.46.
They were followed in a time of 6:44.73 by London gold medalist Esther Lofgren (Newport Beach, Calif.), rowing for Potomac Boat Club, and California Rowing Club’s Stesha Carle (Long Beach, Calif.). Finishing third in a time of 6:54.10 was the composite entry of USTC – Princeton’s Liv Coffey (Watkins Glen, N.Y.) and Vesper Boat Club’s Grace Latz (Jackson, Mich.).
Men’s Pair
The fastest time of the 12 crews in the men’s pair was posted by USRowing Training Center – Oklahoma City’s Mike Gennaro (Havertown, Pa.) and 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Henrik Rummel (Pittsford, N.Y.), who finished in 6:15.61. In second place was the USTC – OKC crew of Grant James (DeKalb, Ill.) and Seth Weil (Menlo Park, Calif.) with a 6:18.69.
Closing out the top three boats in a time of 6:20.24 was the pair of London Olympian Tom Peszek (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and Tom Dethlefs (Lawrenceville, N.J.), rowing as an entry from the USTC – OKC and Princeton.
Women’s Pair
Of the five crews in the women’s pair event, USTC – Princeton’s Felice Mueller (Cleveland, Ohio) and Vicky Opitz (Middleton, Wis.) finished first in a time of 6:52.19, followed by two other USTC – Princeton crews.
The pair of 2012 Olympic women's eight gold medalist Meghan Musnicki (Naples, N.Y.) and Taylor Goetzinger (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) finished in 6:53.10. In third, with a time of 6:55.03, was Lauren Schmetterling (Moorestown, N.J.) and Grace Luczak (Ann Arbor, Mich.).
