Princeton, N.J. - The selection process for crews hoping to compete at the 2013 World Rowing Championships continues May 15-18 on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J., with National Selection Regatta #2.
Some 110 athletes from 18 clubs across the country will compete in six NSR #2 events and one speed order event.
The winners of the selection events will earn the right to compete at one or both of the remaining 2013 Samsung World Rowing Cups and if any of the crews finishes in the top four or top half of the field, they will earn a berth on the team that will compete at the 2013 World Rowing Championships August 25-September 1 in Chungju, South Korea.
The scheduled selection events include the men’s and women’s pairs, men’s and women’s double sculls and lightweight men’s and women’s double sculls. Racing in the speed order event will be the lightweight men’s pair.
The field of athletes features several United States Olympians, national team members and USRowing Training Center athletes, along with athletes from 15 clubs.
Competing in a field of 12 men’s pairs is USRowing Training Center’s 2012 Olympians Henrik Rummel (Pittsford, N.Y.), who won bronze in the men’s four in London and Grant James (DeKalb, Ill.), who finished fourth in the men’s eight; USRowing TC - Oklahoma City’s Nareg Guregian (North Hills, Calif.), who finished eighth in the men’s eight at the 2011 World Rowing Championships and Mike Gennaro (Havertown, Pa.), a London alternate who won gold in the 2011 under 23 men’s eight and gold in the men’s eight and pair at the 2011 Pan American Games, also rowing for the USRowing TC - Oklahoma City.
All five women’s pairs are competing as USRowing Training Center entries and include 2012 Olympic gold medalist Meghan Musnicki (Naples, N.Y.) and Grace Luczak (Ann Arbor, Mich.), who won gold in the event at the 2011 World Rowing Under 23 Championships.
Racing in the men’s double is Bantam Boat Club’s entry of brothers Thomas Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Peter Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio). The Graves finished 16th in the event at the 2011 World Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovenia. They will be up against Craftsbury Rowing Center’s Ben Dann (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) and John Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Potomac Boat Club’s Willie Cowles (Farmington, Conn.) and Matt Miller.
John Graves rowed the lightweight men’s single sculls at the 2009 and 2010 World Rowing Under 23 Championships and won the men’s single at NSR #1 earlier this year. Cowles finished third in the event, followed by Miller in fourth place overall.
Eight crews are scheduled to compete in the women’s double. Among them, 2012 Olympic gold medalist Esther Lofgren (Newport Beach, Calif.), rowing for Potomac Boat Club, and California Rowing Club’s Stesha Carle (Long Beach, Calif.), who was a bronze medalist in the quad at the 2011 World Rowing Championships.
Rowing for the USRowing Training Center - Princeton is the crew of Meghan O’Leary (Baton Rouge, La.) and Ellen Tomek (Flushing, Mich.), a Beijing Olympian who finished fifth in the event. Tomek finished second in the women’s single at NSR #1; O’Leary was fourth.
The lightweight women’s double has eight crews competing and will feature the first and second place finishers in the lightweight women’s single event at NSR #1 - Kate Bertko (Oakland, Calif.), who finished ninth in the women’s double at the 2011 World Rowing Championships and 2012 Olympian Kristin Hedstrom (Concord, Mass.) of California Rowing Club, who finished 11th in the event in London, and won the lightweight women’s single event at the 2012 Head of the Charles Regatta. Bertko and Hedstrom will represent the USRowing Training Center - Oklahoma City.
Also rowing in the event is Nicole Dinion (Falls Church, Va.), who won bronze in the lightweight women’s quad at the 2011 World Rowing Championships; Chelsea Smith (Edina, Minn.), who finished fourth in the quad at the 2012 World Rowing Senior and Junior Championships and Hillary Saeger (Dedham, Mass.), who won bronze in 2011 with Dinion. Smith is training at the USRowing TC - Oklahoma City. Dinion and Saeger are rowing in composite boats.
Six crews are registered in the lightweight men’s double sculls event. Among them is Malta Boat Club’s Dave Smith (Seattle, Wash.) and Sam Cunningham (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Smith and Cunningham finished eighth in the lightweight men’s quad at the 2012 World Rowing Senior and Junior Championships.
Racing in the lightweight men’s pair, the lone speed order event, are seven crews that include eleven athletes training at the USRowing TC - Oklahoma City. Among them are 2012 Olympians Anthony Fahden (Lafayette, Calif.) and Robin Prendes (Miami, Fla.) who finished eighth in the lightweight men’s four in London; Greg Flood (Tulsa, Okla.) and Will Daly (Vail, Colo.) who finished ninth in the event at the at the 2012 World Rowing Senior and Junior Championships; Bob Duff (Huntington Valley, Pa.), who finished eighth in the lightweight men’s quadruple sculls at the 2012 World Rowing Senior and Junior Championships; Christian Klein (Herndon, Va.), who finished fifth in the lightweight men’s eight at the 2011 World Rowing Championships and Kyle Lafferty (Hockessin, Del.) who finished 14th in the lightweight men’s pair at the 2011 World Rowing Championships.
Racing begins Thursday morning at 7:30 a.m. ET with time trials in all seven events. Semifinals will take place Friday morning, with A and B finals scheduled for Saturday morning.
