PRINCETON, N.J. - Matt Imes has been hired as USRowing's Director of High Performance, Executive Director Glenn Merry announced on Tuesday.
Imes, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, has served as the men's national team assistant coach since 2002, coaching boats to medals at both the world championships and under 23 world championships during his tenure. In 2003, he was named the USOC Developmental Coach of the Year for Rowing and was a finalist for the overall award.
"I feel excited and privileged to be able to work with USRowing in this new capacity," Imes said. "Many people have put a considerable amount of time and energy into making the U.S. National Team successful. I hope to assist current and future athletes and coaches attain their goals. Rowing in the United States continues to grow, and I want to utilize this momentum to assure that our national team programs build upon their successes in the future."
In his new role, Imes will manage and implement day-to-day operations of the national team programs, coaches and events. He will be responsible for the development and implementation of the high performance plan and the organization and management of the various components of elite and pre-elite level rowing in the United States. Imes will oversee the athlete support program, the elite athlete health insurance program and provide logistical expertise in scheduling and team travel. Imes also will lead the development of selection procedures for athlete and coaches for all protected events and will work in conjunction with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for monitoring purposes.
"Matt is the perfect candidate to move the national team forward," Merry said. "He brings extensive experience working with the rowing community, our coaches and athletes, and our partners at the USOC and NRF. He has well founded ideas to bring us to the next level and respect among his peers."
Prior to coming to USRowing, Imes spent five years at Oregon State University working with both the men's and women's programs. Imes is married to Challis Lloyd Imes and has two children.
