PRINCETON, N.J. - They made the final, but the trunk and arms mixed double sculls team of Helman Roman (Miami, Fla.) and Laura Goodkind (Long Beach, Calif.) fell one place short of qualifying their boat for the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio.
Roman and Goodkind of Miami Beach Watersports Center finished in third, less than two seconds behind China and Russia in their event Saturday at the Final Paralympic Qualification Regatta in Gavirate, Italy. Only the top two crews qualified for the Paralympics.
The result means that the U.S. will have three Paralympic crews racing in Rio. Those boat classes - the men's and women's arms and shoulders single sculls and the legs, trunk and arms four with coxswain - qualified at the 2015 World Rowing Championships.
The athletes who will race in the men's and women's singles will be decided Sunday at the 2016 U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Team Trials - Rowing at Nathan Benderson Park, in Sarasota, Fla. The legs, trunk and arms four will be named following camp selection.
