More than 60 high school rowing teams from four states will compete in the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association's (PSRA) annual "City Championships" on Sunday, May 8 on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
Approximately 2,500 boys and girls representing high schools from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and New York are expected to compete in the one-day event which also serves as a qualifier for the Scholastic Rowing Association of American Regatta May 27 and 28 and the USRowing National Youth Championships June 10, 11 and 12.
The May 8 Championship regatta concludes a series of seven regattas sponsored this spring by the PSRA on the Schuylkill River, including the Dr. Robert White Novice and Freshmen Regatta on May 1 and five Flick-Horvat Regattas that ran on consecutive Sundays from March 20 through April 17. The final Flick regatta on April 17 featured 500 entries from 64 PSRA member schools and nine guest teams from four different states.
The City Championship began with a handful of local boys' schools in the 1970s and has grown into one of the largest high school rowing competitions in the country. "The City Championship is the penultimate event of the season for the PSRA," said Leslie Pfeil, PSRA president. "Not only are gold, silver and bronze medals awarded in all events that day, but we also award points trophies to the boys' and girls' teams that have accumulated the most points during our series of the five Flick regattas. It's a true celebration of high school rowing."
The PSRA series of seven regattas is part of the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series which brings together 20 previously independent competitive Philadelphia rowing events into the first yearlong regatta series in the United States.
