To accommodate recent weather patterns, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has sent recommendations to Congress for a major shift in seasonal markers, including the start of "meteorological spring" to May 1, the official reduction of spring to a two-month season or less, and even the shift of Groundhog Day from February 2 to March 2 each year.
The implications for rowing are under intense discussion, with many coaches supporting adoption of the Canadian approach of classifying rowing as a fall sport. "Then we could 'work really hard' at recruiting all spring, like soccer coaches do," said Colby coach coach Andrew Wall.
On the west coast, a consensus has yet to emerge, although crews will be undergoing training to drink backsplash during practice in order to conserve water.
