Attendees at the 2014 World Championships were taken aback by the rigorous enforcement of uniform rules at the starting line, including concerns about sock lengths, warm-weather gear worn by coxswains, and more. The presence of bonnets and scarves confounded even the officials, creating considerable confusion among crews that use them. To avoid problems at this year's critical Olympic-qualifying Worlds in Aiguebelette, the US women have adopted new training gear in hopes of having adapted fully by August 22.
Among the changes are mandatory bonnets and scarves during training, as shown in the accompanying photo. Additionally, an inquiry into the use of colored zinc oxide has been submitted to FISA this month.
