Based on the "platinum" status of the first three levels of USRowing Coaching Education (Levels 1, 2 and 3), USRowing today unveiled plans to extend coaching certification to "the next level" with four new levels, complete with textbooks, lectures, and the much-loved open book exams to earn certification.
"Our existing coaching certificates really only address the rudiments of what successful rowing coaches should know," said Black Willie, USRowing's Director of Coaching Education and part-time pirate. "While no one would argue that Levels 1, 2 and 3 have been unsuccesfull, we really felt that we should expand into the next level of coaching with our four new levels."
Coaching Level 4 focusses specifically on coaching decision making, in the form of "yes/no" questions that coaches are expected to answer at the drop of a hat. "Clams/no clams," "bucket/no bucket," "seatrace/no seatrace," etc.
Coaching Levels 5 & 6 are currently vague, but are described as "cutting edge." Coaching Level 7, unofficially dubbed "The Black Arts," are special lectures and discussion, given by secret invitation in a location where if we told you, we would have to kill you.
"Knowing as we do that our USRowing Level 3-certified coaches are doing a world of good for their programs, we are excited to see the impact that our Level 6 & 7 coaches will have," said Willie.
