Rowing on the water in most parts of Canada is still months away, but rowers and fitness enthusiasts across the country will prove that winter is not holding them back this weekend.
Several indoor rowing events are planned for Feb. 06 and Feb. 07, including the two largest, long-running events - the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships and the Monster Erg, which both take place on Sunday.
Olympians join the mix at the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships including Romina Stefancic of Victoria, B.C.; Krista Guloien of Port Moody, B.C.; Janine Hanson of Winnipeg, Man.; Jane Rumball of Fredericton, N.B.; Rachelle de Jong of Regina, Sask., Sarah Bonikowsky of Orangeville, Ont., and Ashley Brzozowicz of Toronto.
Olympic bronze medalist (2008 lightweight women's double) Tracy Cameron of Shubenacadie, N.S., will also compete in Mississauga.
Other 2009 women's National Team members include Sandra Kisil of Ancaster, Ont., Emma Darling of Vancouver, B.C. and Jennifer Tuters of Peterborough, Ont. - three of the four who took at bronze at last year's World Championships. However, these events are not restricted to elite athletes. Overall, the indoor regattas attract competitors of all background and ages. At the Canadian Indoors this year, the youngest participant is four and oldest is 74. Spectators are welcome.
This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the Victoria event - the Monster Erg. The regatta will run 33 events in 15 minute intervals, starting at 9.30 am, Pacific time.
National champions will be determined based on the top results between Victoria, Regina, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax. Top placers have a chance to win a trip to the World Indoor Rowing Championships in Boston the following weekend.
