USRowing has announced the creation of two new stand-alone qualification regattas for the 2010 USRowing Youth National Championships.
The 2010 USRowing Mid-Atlantic Junior District Championships and the 2010 USRowing Northeast Junior District Championships will replace the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Junior Regional Championship, which had served as a combined qualifier for the two regions for the past several years.
Princeton National Rowing Association (PNRA) will host the Mid-Atlantic Championships May 8 at Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J., while Lowell High School Rowing will host the Northeast Championships May 15-16 on the Merrimack River in Lowell, Mass.
With the establishment of the two new regattas, all seven of the Youth National Championship districts now will have their own championship regattas. They are intended to provide crews qualification opportunities within their own region, as well as provide additional qualification spots in line with the other district championships.
While there were discussions of dividing the NEMA regatta throughout 2009 and in early 2010, initially this division had been delayed for one year to allow for the infrastructure to be put into place to support two successful regattas. However, scheduling necessities and developments in infrastructure led to a re-examination of the split and the establishment of the two events. All rowers participating in the events will be required to be individual USRowing members.
