BRIGHTON, MA — The Institute for Rowing Leadership at Community Rowing Inc. holds its second "What Works" Summit on coaching education this weekend, welcoming coaches and rowers to the Harry Parker Boathouse as the rowing world looks toward the Olympics in London later this year.
The Summit begins today, Friday, Feb. 10, and runs through midday Sunday.
This year's "What Works" Summit will feature talented international speakers and presenters like Harmut Buschbacher, Director of the German Rowing Federation, and Matt Rostron, Managing Director of London Youth Rowing, as well as interactive educational sessions. The Summit, a significant success in its first year in 2011, combines top notch educational content with a unique learning and inspirational format and structure.
This year's keynote speakers include Buschbacher, Rostron, and Bob Ernst, Director of Rowing and Women's Head Coach at the University of Washington. "As part of Community Rowing's fierce commitment to rowing education, we are very happy to welcome presenters from Europe, the UK, Canada, and across the United States," said Bruce Smith, Executive Director of Community Rowing, Inc. "We are pumped about taking part in discussions that will be fascinating and educational for everyone -- both coaches and rowers -- who are students of the sport."
The 'What Works' Summit is an opportunity specifically designed for coaches to come together and learn from leaders in the field about best practices for teaching and learning. With a focus on small groups and active discussion, innovative use of audio visual aids, and the practical, stunning setting and view of the Charles River from within the walls of the award-winning Harry Parker Boathouse, the weekend will be the most intensive learning experience of the year for coaches who want to be excel.
A Pre-Conference Workshop begins at 1 p.m. on Friday, and a Keynote Address, "Launching Your Program - Fireside Chat with Matt Rostron," will take place at 6:30 p.m., with Community Rowing's Director of Outreach Ellen Minzner moderating.
Saturday's sessions include: "Perspectives in Sports Medicine," "Elite Rowers and Mental Imagery," "Leadership: An Integral Perspective," "Hearing Voices: The Influence of the Internal Dialogue on Learning, Emotion, and Focus," and "Agility and Neuromuscular Training for Rowing."
Buschbacher will speak about "Building the German Juggernaut," and Ernst's planned address is "The Husky Way."
Additonal Saturday sessions will focus on Peer-to-Peer Information Exchange and Technique.
After a game-show competition on Saturday evening, with electronic voting, featuring coaches' funniest stories about coaching, Sunday's events will include: "Practicing with a Purpose," "The Art of Creating a Crew," "Disruptive Innovation in Coaching," "The Development of a Princeton Oarsman," and "Building Championship Crews in Ten Weeks."

The "What Works" Summit is part of Community Rowing, Inc.'s Institute for Rowing Leadership Program, which also features a year-long program for Fellows. Other speakers this weekend include Marty Crotty, Head Coach of Men's Lightweight Rowing at Princeton University; Lori Dauphiny, Head Coach of Women's Openweight Rowing at Princeton University; Greg Hughes, Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing at Princeton University; Justin Moore, Head Coach of Women's Rowing at Syracuse University; and Michelle Guerette, Silver Medalist Women's Single Sculls at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
Local speakers include Ethan Curren, Director of Coaching Education at Community Rowing, Inc., and Chris Richards, Head Coach and teacher at the Belmont Hill School.
Others participating are B. Anders Holmberg, Doctoral Candidate in Kinesiology with a focus on Sport Psychology and Motor Behavior; Adam Naylor, Director/Sport Psychologist at the Boston University Athletic Enhancement Center; Judith Vogel, a Fellow at the Institute for Rowing Leadership; Tyler Page, Owner and Director of Integrative Health and Performance; Jim Joy, Founder and Director of the Joy of Sculling Conference; and Peter Mallory, author of "The Sport of Rowing."
