On November 24, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the dredging of the Cooper River racecourse would commence in April 2014 and run through sometime in 2015, thereby displacing the 2014 spring racing season (Rowers prep for short-term disruption, long-term benedit from Cooper dredging). Cooper River boathouse manager Jamie Stack has confirmed that the dredging will not begin until July 2014, and is scheduled to be completed by the end of February 2015. Thus the only racing disruptions would be during the fall of 2014.
Stack sent the following to the Inquirer on November 27, but the Inquirer has not responded to date.
Point of clarification in your article, (Rowers prep for short-term disruption, long-term benefit from Cooper dredging,Nov. 24)- the physical construction of the water quality project (dredging) of the Cooper River will be from July 1 to Feb. 28, 2015. Regattas will be held until the July 1 date meaning the spring season will proceed as usual and the major disruptions will occur during the summer and fall months canceling two fall regattas regularly held at the venue. A full slate of spring regattas will be run this spring of 2014 and a total cancellation of rowing from the schedule is incorrect.
We hope this is helpful information to crews and regattas making travel and racing plans for 2014 and beyond.
